Andrew Thomson

The Sherwood Magpies will be running a mixed and a men's AFL 9s competition at the club from 7pm onwards on Monday Nights starting on the 16th of October and finishing on the 4th of December.

AFL 9s is a fast, fun, free-flowing game that involves 9 players on each team playing on a smaller field. Best of all, it's 'touch football' with no tackling or bumping, making it suitable for everyone.

The coordinators for the Sherwood Magpies AFL 9s Spring Season are: Max Webber - maxwelljameswebber@gmail.com, 0408 692 077 and Cameron Smith - camsmith.5@hotmail.com, 0459 475 817.

The cost for a team is $800. If you want to play but don't have a team, then you can register as an individual, and you will be put into a team.

For more information and to register go to the AFL 9s Website

Barts Named Queensland Volunteer of the Year

Andrew Thomson

Western Magpies/Sherwood stalwart and Life Member David "Barts" Bartlett was named the QAFL Volunteer of the Year and then capped it off as being also named the Queensland Volunteer of the Year for the whole state.

Barts was nominated by Western Magpies Coach Brydan Morgan who recognised the amount of work Barts does for the club.

It is all for the love of the Magpies and ''the game" for Barts.

21752187_1524955464210320_5521385311147308158_n.jpg

The QAFL citation included that Barts "has been involved with the Magpies for over 35 years and he has always put his hand up to do anything to help the club".

In recent seasons he has run the BBQ on match days with "Bart's Burgers" famous as the best in the QAFL.

He cleans and maintains the club surrounds to make the area as clean and presentable as possible, he cleans changerooms several times per week after training and matches and helps with ground maintenance. He also assists with junior training although this has been restricted recently by a degenerative left hip which had him limping quite significantly in the past year.  He is now recovering from hip replacement surgery in the past 3 weeks which hopefully will have him back as good as new again soon.

Barts has coached in various capacities in his time for the club, coaching the Sherwood Reserves in 1983.

He was recognised within the club with the conferring of Life Membership in 2014.

He has also had a long involvement with schoolboys AFL in the western suburbs and still helps out at school level local football and at regional and state carnivals.

He is a passionate AFL and Chelmer man and is a legend at Powenyenna Oval.

He was a seriously good athlete and footballer as a young man and when the Magpies conferred the Life Membership on him in 2014, Barts was not present to receive his badge.

He was in Melbourne receiving a Life Membership of Ivanhoe Athletics Club which just indicates that Barts is a bloke who loves his sport and gives far more than he has ever received.

It might not sound like a lot, but within minutes of Barts award being uploaded to the Western Magpies Facebook page he had over 160 likes and well over 40 comments.

This is a small sample but it indicates the esteem that the very likeable David "Barts" Bartlett is held in at the Magpies but also in the wider AFL community.

And how could you not love that crooked smile that is always on his face.

You beauty, Barts!!!

STRONG WIN LIFTS COLTS INTO GRAND FINAL
The Western Magpies  Colts bounced back hard on the weekend and put PBC to the sword at Labrador in the Preliminary Final. The young Magpies were far too good, running away with a 38 point win. It was a much tougher and committed performance by the boys, suffocating the Lions around the contest and running them off their legs on the counter-attack.

The back line was in fine form again on the weekend, holding the Lions at bay all game and keeping them goalless in the first quarter and restricting them to only one goal by halftime. Whitlam Bishop was outstanding at fullback and was ably supported by Ethan Sivijs, Tristan Dowdy, Cam Smith, Zac Stegmeyer and Sam Hartog. It was also a much-improved effort from the forward line this weekend with key forwards Hamish Campbell, Jordan Bonney and Jack Austin leading up at the footy all day and consistently providing a contest in the air. Jayden Johnson and Will Gillespie relished their new roles in the forward half this weekend, working hard all day to pressure the Lions defenders and lock the ball in the forward 50.

Finn Collison returned to the lineup and made an instant impact in the ruck, contesting hard in the middle and finding space on transition. The entire midfield group stepped up with Max Webber, Jacob Sheath, Caleb Franks and Chris Jenkins all playing quality games through the middle of the ground. Tough and hard around the contest, expect a big showing from this group in the Grand Final on Saturday.

With another game under their belts, the Colts will go into the Grand Final full of confidence that they can upset the highly fancied Morningside at Southport on Saturday morning. The boys will need to lift another gear, but with a much-needed hit out on Saturday are primed and raring to go in what should be a cracking match as the two top teams of 2017 battle it out for the Premiership Cup.

Western Magpies 3.3, 4.6, 8.10, 11.13 (79)

Palm Beach Currumbin 0.0, 1.1, 4.2, 6.5 (41)

COLTS TO BOUNCE BACK FOR GRAND FINAL BERTH

The Western Magpies Colts will be looking to bounce back this week as they take on Palm Beach-Currumbin in the Preliminary Final at Labrador on Saturday. Both teams appear evenly matched going into the must win final with a one all record throughout the home and away season. The young Magpies have had a big week on the track and are keen to repent for a poor showing in the first final last week.

A big week on the track has the Colts primed for a huge game against the Lions. Plenty of time has been spent working on their defensive pressure and contested ball work this week and the coaching staff believe that the boys are prepared as well as they could be for this week’s match. Hard man Sam de Nys drops out of the team due to injury which gives Finn Collison an opportunity in the ruck after a long lay-off with injury.

The backline will look to be at their attacking best this week with Sam Hartog adding some attacking flair and pace to the already quality group down back. The forwards will be looking to hit the scoreboard with a bit more regularity this week and Jordan Bonney and Jack Austin appear to be itching for a big game in front of goals. After having their colours lowered last week, the midfield group are sure to hit back hard and get on top around the contest. Lead by co-captain Max Webber,  expect a big showing from this quality group of young footballers.

In some respects if the Pies win this game, the extra match will have toughened them up for a solid grand final contest next week.  They were underdone last week after playing only one match in the previous month.

This match is shaping up as an absolute cracker so get down and support the boys as they look to progress to the Grand Final next Saturday. Starting at 9 am, the Colts would love a big crowd to get down to Labrador and support the boys.

UNDERDONE COLTS GO DOWN IN SECOND SEMI FINAL

The Western Magpies Colts suffered their biggest loss of the year this week against a red hot Morningside at Labrador on Saturday morning. Coming off a 21 day break it took the young Colts too long to work into the game and by then the Panthers had a head of steam up and were well in control.

The game was fairly even at quarter time with the Panthers going into the break with a slender lead. Unfortunately, for the Pies though Morningside would come out firing after the break and take full control of the game. From here on in it was one way traffic with the Pies Colts struggling to gain a foothold in the game. For the first time this year the Pies copped a belting around the ball and were unable to apply enough defensive pressure to stop the Panthers moving the ball into the forward line with clinical ease. This superior ball movement and control starved the Pies of opportunity and kept our classy runners out of the game.

Whitlam Bishop, Sam Hartog and Cam Smith worked tirelessly all day in defence under a huge amount of pressure and Hamish Campbell worked hard across half forward to lead strongly up strongly and provide a real presence up forward. Whilst soundly beaten on the day Max Webber, Caleb Franks and Jacob Sheath tried hard, but expect this proud group of midfielders to bounce back hard in the Preliminary Final.

The boys will now set their sights on the Preliminary Final against Palm Beach- Currumbin at Labrador on Saturday morning. PBC defeated Broadbeach in the First Semi Final on Sunday. The Morningside game served as a stark reminder of the work rate and standard required at this level, and now with a game under their belts, the Pies coaching staff and supporters all  look forward to seeing a much improved effort from the Colts this weekend.

GRAND FINAL BERTH AWAITS COLTS

After a long 3 week wait the Western Magpies Colts finally get to sink their teeth into their first final. The Colts unexpectedly finished on top of the ladder and have had to bide their time over the round 18 bye and a first week break from finals action. There has been no rest for the boys though as they've worked hard, recovered well and are ready and raring to go against the Morningside Panthers this week in the QAFL Second Semi Final at Labrador on Saturday.

The Colts have finally had almost a full list to select from and will welcome Jordan Bonney, Chris Jenkins and Cam Smith back into the team that knocked the Panthers off in round 17. The young Magpies pride themselves on their pressure around the footy and will look to midfielders  Sam deNys, Caleb Franks, Jacob Sheath and Max Webber to lead from the front in this regard.

The forward line is chock full of talent and seems to have a nice mix of pace and height with the return of some key players, and should prove to be a handful for the opposition defenders. Keep an eye on excitement machine Abdullah Haddad who has been in scintillating form over recent weeks.

The group has worked hard in recent weeks to really knuckle down on their defensive structures, knowing full well that Morningside love to kick big scores and can be dangerous if you give them too much space. The Colts backline, as always, will relish the challenge and will be hoping to restrict the Panthers to another lowly score. Lead by Ethan Sivijs, Tristan Dowdy, Zac Stegmeyer and Whitlam Bishop our defensive unit looks set for a big game, holding their opponents at bay and then rebounding fiercely.

In a  huge match for the club,  the boys seem primed to put four quality quarters of football together and gain straight access into the “big dance”, a just reward for all the hard yards they have put in this season.

Kicking off at 9am at Labrador, get down and support the team in what should be a cracking match. As the last Magpie team standing in any grade of Senior and Junior footy - it should be a great crowd supporting the Magpies on the day.

CLOCK REPRESENTS AUSTRALIA AT OCEANIA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ex Western Magpies dual premiership player Matt "Clock" Thompson has taken up the javelin as a Paralympic Sport and represented Australia at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Suva, Fiji in July

IMG_5305.JPG.jpeg

Thompson was born with his right arm absent below the elbow. He was canvassed early in the year by Paralympic officials in Canberra where he is working as a doctor at the Canberra Hospital.

After some thought he decided to give it a crack and javelin was thought to be his best fit.

He has been training at the AIS under coach Hamish McDonald,  who won gold in shot put at the Atlanta Paralympics in 1996.

He has improved markedly with a best throw of 40 metres, still a way off the world record of 60 metres. He has gone from 25 metres to 40 metres in about 4 months.

He was fourth in Suva in a multi-class event but he was the only athlete in the amputee class and places were decided on what percentage of the world record in their class an athlete threw in the competition.

He says it is an improvement in technique that has made the difference and he has had to basically unlearn his cricket bowling action, which gained him over 50 wickets in a season twice in Brisbane sub-district A Grade competition.

Javelin technique is totally different to bowling and as this improves he should continue to throw further and further.

Originally the Tokyo Olympics was the aim but his improvement is such that the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games is now not out of question.

In the meantime he is still playing footy for the powerful Ainslie club in Canberra where he made his Seniot debut this year alongside former Mt Gravatt & Brisbane Lions player Will Hamill, who is now working in Canberra.

IMG_1981.JPG

Last year he played Reserves and won Ainslie's Best and Fairest in an undefeated premiership season.

Over the weekend, he kicked 4 goals in the Grand Final to secure back to back Premierships alongside Andrew (also a former Sherwood junior and Magpies Under 18 player) who also took home the league goalkicking award.

At the moment football and the javelin can co-exist but the time may be drawing close when the footy may have to give way to the dream of representing Australia at the Paralympics.

COLTS MINOR PREMIERS

The Western Magpies Colts have topped the QAFL Colts ladder and are Minor Premiers.  As a result of a final round bye, they have inadvertently been forced into a fortnight off from football.  Despite this, with a number of players nursing niggles they will have enjoyed the first week of the finals series off as they watched Morningside defeat Broadbeach over the weekend to confirm their opponents for next week.

The Pies had a 12-4 record and finished a game clear ofearly ladder leader Morningside who faltered in several matches at the tail end of the season, including twice going down to the Pies in the final 6 weeks.

The Pies came from behind to overcome Morningside by 3 goals in their round 17 clash a fortnight ago to go 4 points clear on top of the ladder but with the Pies having a last round bye and the Panthers having a superior percentage all they needed was a win in the final round to top the ladder.

It was not to be as the third placed Broadbeach defeated Morningside in the final round of the season before this result was comprehensively reversed in the first final this week with Morningside winning convincingly.

Coach Reid Dobson has his charges firing at the right time of the season and pleasingly will have virtually a full squad to pick from for the first time this season to hit the finals at full tilt.

Coach Dobson has put his charges through some solid workouts in lieu of playing the game and with the help of the senior playing group, some modified practice matches have been played over the past 10 days.

After a minor mid season slump where the Pies dropped a few close ones, they have been a picture of consistency - and come into the finals with plenty of winning momentum.

Time & location of game TBA

Coopers Friday Footy Update - Undermanned Woodsmen bow out in tight battle

Andrew Thomson

Undermanned Woodies bow out in straight set

The Woodsmen took on a resurgent Sandgate side last Friday night at home in front of a big crowd in a do or die Preliminary Final and unfortunately came away with a narrow loss, thus putting them out of the Premiership race for 2017 in a season that showed so much promise.  Ultimately injury and availability of players would prove to be their downfall, as well as failing to take their chances in consecutive finals decided by small margins.

The Woodies took the field full of confidence, but met a strong Sandgate outfit keen to put a ‘hoodoo’ to rest.  Both teams were particularly tall, and Sandgate in particular fielded a brutally strong midfield and were able to bully the Woodies off the footy early.  Despite this, the Woodsmen started well – winning the opening clearance when a Thomson kick fell into the hands of in-form full-forward Jay Baker for the opening scoring opportunity.  Unfortunately the shot sailed wide and this was the tail of the tape for the Woodies in their finals campaign.

With injury to Paul Eaton the previous week, and Tim Green returning from a 5 week injury layoff – Lochie McDonald was tasked with the job on the dangerous Sandgate spearhead.  A job he performed well once before, however another year older and another year slower – he opted not to go on fast leads but instead stay in the goal square and outmuscle his opponent – leading to Sandgate kicking the opening 2 goals of the match from just a handful of forward entries, while the Woodies finished the quarter with just 2 behinds and sadly, important defender Sam Long was out for the rest of the night with a back injury.

Missing from the Woodsmen forward-line were playing coach and league goalkicking winner, Chris Mihalopoulos and the electric Jake Fuentes who were both unavailable.  This would time and time again prove particularly crucial throughout the match as the Woodies pumped the ball forward repeatedly only to see it marched back out with ease due to a distinct lack of pressure at ground level.

With Lachlan Woods and Ben Ness also missing from the midfield rotations, there was a distinct danger the Woodies on-ball division would tire – so a strong 2nd quarter effort was needed to steady the ship.  Things started positively with the Woodies camped in Sandgate forward-line for the opening 5 minutes of the quarter before Sean Toohey snapped truly to kick the opening goal.  Disappointingly, the Hawks struck straight back with a quality goal straight from the centre clearance with the Woodies midfield asleep at the wheel.  An arm wrestle ensued, with Sandgate enjoying their strongest period of the game in terms of possession and field position with their big brute midfield getting on top around stoppages and locking the ball up.

However, Gerard Moore was starting to put on a show across half-forward for the Woodies and was a shining light in the match with his impressive work-rate and marking power – pulling down grab after grab to get the Woodies out of trouble.  Eventually ‘Big G’ took things into his own hands as the Woodies didn’t even look like scoring from forward 50 entries with a long bomb from outside 40 to close the margin to just 1 goal just 2 minutes before half-time.  However, Sandgate were rewarded for their strong 2nd quarter efforts with a late goal before the siren to take a 12 point halftime lead in a low scoring affair.

The Woodies re-assessed their matchups at half-time desperately looking for a bit of extra speed out wide, deeper forward entries and a makeshift small forward.  Sam Curtis had been well held in the midfield and was pushed forward, while Lochie McDonald was moved to a more customary wing position as Davis was assigned a tagging role on a quick and dangerous Sandgate opponent who was having a strong influence.  While the McDonald and Davis moves worked, Curtis was out of sorts deep forward and the experiment was quickly abandoned.  McDonald provided extra run around the ball and was able to get the ball deeper into the forward line with his penetrating kicks.  This allowed the Woodies to lock the ball forward and re-set, as Sandgate had repeatedly dropped a man back for intercept marks and waltz the ball out of their defensive 50 without pressure.

Unfortunately Sandgate were able to kick the opening goal of the half within just 1 minute after a questionable free kick at a centre stoppage.  The Woodies were able to re-set and then set about dominating the 3rd quarter, but sadly for little or no reward.  Hockley kicked truly from the pocket, while Moore kicked another big goal to close the margin to just 1 goal.  McDonald then set sail from 60 out and the ball either bounced through for a goal, or was kicked through by Baldwin on the line to put the Woodies in front for the first time.  However, inexplicably the on-field umpire overruled the goal umpire from more than 40m away to overturn the decision!

The Woodies then again had 2 easy set shots from directly in front well within kicking range, only to register minor scores before a rare forward entry from Sandgate showed their forward-line efficiency when it resulted in a grubbered goal from the pocket to go into ¾ time with a 9 point lead.

The final quarter started positively when Hockley and Thomson combined to get the ball to Moore, who again outmarked several opponents and kicked truly from 50m just 30 seconds into the final quarter.  The match turned into an armwrestle across the Woodsmen half forwardline before a further 2 behinds from relatively gilt edged chances close the margin to just 1 point.  Sandgate again pushed the ball forward where their full forward was able to mark strongly and push the margin out again to a 7 point lead with 15 minutes to play.

Despite there being 15 minutes on the clock, a sense of panic spread through the Woodies outfit as their inability to edge in front became a reality check as their season was slipping away before their eyes.  Davis was doing a quality lockdown job, while Moore continued to dominate the game – almost single handedly keeping the Woodies grand final hopes alive.  Hockley was battling manfully one out as his midfield teammates were soundly beaten, while Thomson was clearly struggling with a hip complaint but started to get on top around the ruck contests as the game wore on.  After yet another arm wrestle on the Oxley Road wing, with several repeat stoppages – Kerma and Baldwin were able to combine to push the ball forward where Moore again provided a strong contest, Baker was able to pick up a loose ball where he found Thomson at the top of the goal square who had pushed forward hard from the contest.  The resulting goal put the Woodies again within just 1 point and a mountain of 2nd half momentum it seemed inevitable would take them to victory with over 10 minutes still on the clock and the Woodies well on top around the ground with Moore marking everything that came his way.

Davis was continuing his lockdown job, but his opponent was pushed deep forward and the Woodies were unable to sacrifice his presence around the stoppages so the tag was abandoned.  This was a great move by Sandgate as a tiring Woodies backline couldn’t lock down on the threat and he quickly earnt a free kick from a superb chasedown tackle before cooly slotting what turned out to the match-winning goal from the boundary line in what was a clear equal best on ground display with the Woodsmen’s Gerard Moore.

10 points down with 7 minutes to play, the Woodies were able to again create further scoring opportunities to give themselves a chance – but were unable to take their chances.  A running shot from Verma slid across the face for a behind, before another last minute opportunity went begging – perhaps due to panic more than anything else.

In the end, Sandgate played a quality game and took their chances to win 8.5-53 to 6.8-44 and the Woodies were bundled out in disappointing fashion to kill their 2017 Premiership hopes.

Best: Moore, Thomson, Hockley, Davis, Bell, T.McEvoy

Goals: Moore 3, Thomson, Hockley, Toohey 1

Place Player Update - BRENT STAKER TO PLAY IN EJ WHITTEN LEGENDS MATCH

Andrew Thomson

Former Western Magpies key forward Brent Staker will play in tonight’s E.J (Ted) Whitten legends match  at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne.

stakes.jpg

Staker played for the Pies in 2016 before taking on an Assistant Coach’s role with the Brisbane Lions successful AFL Womens’ team in 2017.

Staker, originally from Broken Hill, will play for the Allies team tonight and he will be one of the fitter and trimmer players going around on the ground. He has kept himself fit and in good news for the Pies is contemplating a return to the Pies in 2018 for a number of games when his other commitments allow.

Staker was recruited to the West Coast Eagles in 2003 before joining  the Brisbane Lions in 2010 where he played 50matches until 2015.  He struggled with soft tissue injuries which limited his appearances while at the Lions so has been in training for tonight’s match to lessen the  chances of further injury.  He played 110 matches for the Eagles for a total of 160 AFL matches.

The match will be shown live tonight on 7Mate and FoxFooty channel.

Coopers Friday Footy Preview - Woodsmen take on Sandgate in Prelim Final

Andrew Thomson

The Woodsmen host the Sandgate Hawks tonight in a home Preliminary Final at 730pm.

A win will put the Woodies into their 5th Grand Final where they will take on fellow 2 time Friday night Premiers – Zillmere in what would surprisingly be the first time the two clubs have met in the big dance.

However, the Woodies first need to get past a resurgent Hawks side coming off a dominant win over Morningside last week.  The Woodsmen have a great record vs the Hawks, having never dropped a game – however they did play out a thrilling draw early this year before the Woodies won the last two encounters by 40+ on each occasion.

Coming back into the side this week are reigning B&F winner Sam Curtis who was sorely missed in the 5 point loss to Zillmere last week, as well as ruckman Andrew Thomson for his 100th game for the Woodsmen, 2nd only behind Kiran Kerma.  Also returning to the side are skipper Sean Toohey from a hamstring, defenders Tim Green and Matty Prior from calf and shoulder injuries and the McEvoy brothers in Tim and Brett who were both unavailable last week.

Once again, as is tradition for any Woodsmen outfit – the back 6 looks particularly strong.  Prior and Young in the pockets and this week Lochie McDonald again moves to full-back for matchup reasons.  In form defender Andrew Bell will no doubt spend significant time down there as well, once matchups become apparent.  Across half back, the Woodies look particularly strong and also boast plenty of experience with Long and T.McEvoy on the flanks and S.Matthews filling the key post.  In an embarassment of riches, Tim Green the perennial superstar CHB will start on the bench in his return from injury while Blake Barkley also starts on the bench and will no doubt be utilised both forward and back throughout the game.

Across the midfield is Verma on one wing, and Davis on the other with Hockley playing in the centre and directing traffic.  Davis will no doubt spent some time on the ball, while Hockley can rest forward and be particularly dangerous as a marking option.  In the ruck will be Thomson looking to work back hard in defence and also give his midfielders first use around the stoppages, while Garland and Curtis will be the starting on-ball brigade complimenting a quality midfield with their mix of speed and tackling pressure from Curtis and Garland as a traditional ruck rover who can take a good grab and ‘play tall’.  On-ball rotations will also include B.McEvoy and G.Matthews, creating a touch of class by foot.

Across half-forward is the returning skipper, in form big man Moore will fill the key post with utility Baldwin on the other flank who has a bit of the mercurial about him with the ability to take a screamer and also get on the end of it at ground level.

Deep forward will feature G.Matthews in the one pocket, and the electric Jakey Fuentes in the other pocket creating plenty of headaches for the opposition.  Out of the square will come Jay Baker who has hit some quality late season form and is a known big game player late in the year, kicking 6 goals in the Woodies 2014 Grand Final win – 5 before half time.

The Woodies will need to play as a strong cohesive unit despite another week of mass changes to take care of a dangerous Sandgate outfit and keep a close eye on the dangerous Hawks who have the ability to score quickly when on a role.

We encourage all the Magpie fans to get down to the club tonight and send the boys into the Grand Final next week in front of a big home crowd!

Prelim vs Sandgate 2017.jpg

PLACE PREVIEW - IT'S FINALS TIME!

Andrew Thomson

As the home & away seasons come to an end, a number of Magpie outfits are still in the hunt for ultimate glory!

COLTS

The Western Magpie Colts side finished the season last week with another victory over ladder leaders Morningside to take top spot on the ladder going into a final round bye.  They can now finish no lower than 2nd spot and will enjoy the week off next week regardless.

Woodsmen

The Woodies finished their H&A season in 2nd spot and lost a heartbreaking thriller last week by 5 points against Zillmere.  However, they get the 2nd chance this week with a home Preliminary Final against Sandgate on Friday night 25/8 at 7:30 pm.  We would encourage all supporters to get down and cheer the boys home.

U/16

A powerful U/16 Division 1 side, the Magpies finished the season alone on top of the ladder and enjoyed the week off last week in the opening week of finals.  However, this week they take on Aspley at Keith Surridge Park, Alex Hills to secure direct entry into the 2017 Grand Final.

The game is on Sunday at 2:15pm and again we encourage all Magpie fans to get to Alex Hills and support the boys.  It's a big week for coach Jake Fuentes who will also play for the Woodies on Friday night!

U/12

The Sherwood U/12 side started their finals campaign last week in a thrilling elimination final win over Park Ridge by 3 points.  They now take on Wynnum at Dauth Park, Beenleigh for a shot at the Preliminary Final next week. The boys played Wynnum twice this year and split the points evenly with a 12 point win and 5 point loss - so this match is up for grabs!

Friday 25 August 6:45pm at Beenleigh.

MACK TRUCK MATCH REVIEW - LAPSES CONTINUE TO COST PIES

Andrew Thomson

After an even first quarter where the Magpies were wasteful, Morningside capitalised on three key lapses in concentration by the young Western Magpies team to take control of their match at Hawthorne on Saturday. The Pies went down 18.9-117 to 7.13-55.

In their final match of the year before a last round bye, out of finals contention and with a long injury list, the Pies started brightly kicking to the northern end favoured by a strong southerly cross wind. However a return of 0.7 when controlling play proved costly and after a further arm wrestle for the majority of the second quarter, a 5 goal burst in the final 5-6 minutes of the second quarter saw Morningside in control of a deflated Pies outfit at half time. The Magpies had 2 less scoring shots than the Panthers but trailed by 32 points at the long break.

The Panthers then kicked the first 3 goals immediately after half time before a late third quarter rally and 4 goals lifted the Pies, which was a more accurate reflection of a tight battle for long periods in the game.

The home team then booted four quick goals early in the last to ram home their advantage.
Morningside booted 12 of their 18 goals in three 5-6 minute periods in the match which probably indicated the young Magpies were physically and mentally tired after a tough season. But for long periods of the game it was a tough and tight contest.

Matt Dillon was superb in the last line of defence, keeping Morningside ace Kent Abey to one goal and he received good support from half back Mitchell Stallard who again showed his class and poise in traffic.

Tom Ielasi was busy in midfield and his clean ball handling and good disposal were a highlight and he will not be without a chance in the Bill Peirce Medal count in early October.

Luke Mitchell again relished the opportunity to play more of a midfield role on a wing and he won plenty of the ball.

Logan Murray had another productive match in midfield with tough footy in the clinches and was supported by a typically belligerent display from on-baller Gareth Crawford who has enjoyed a vintage season on-ball.

Val Pope worked hard all game but for little reward.

The Pies look forward to supporting the club's Colts team in the finals who are guaranteed a top 2 finish after a good win on Saturday and may yet finish on top if results in the final round of the season fall their way.   The Woodsmen, U16 Div 1 and U12 sides also continue in finals this week, so please get out to support the boys in Black & White.

The club's Vote Count and Presentation Night is scheduled for Friday , October 6th.

Coach Brydan Morgan

"It has been a long season with a young team and it showed a bit today. Lapses in concentration proved costly but the final score does not truly reflect the effort the boys put in for most of the match. For long periods of the game we more than matched them.

I am very proud of this side and they have been resilient for most of the year. We did have a couple of bad games mid year but were pretty good in most games and several narrow early season losses proved costly in the end.

I have been told we had 6 players playing today from last year's Preliminary Final team and add about 8-10 regular senior players out with injury in recent weeks and to think we were still in the race for a finals spot until last week speaks volumes for the character of this side and our youth.

With a lot of young players getting an opportunity at this level we will be much better placed next year than we were this season."

UNDERMANNED RESERVES BATTLED ON GAMELY

A patched up and undermanned Western Magpies Reserves were well beaten on the scoreboard but battled hard to the end of the match and their season against top placed Morningside on Saturday.

The Pies long injury list caught up with the Reserves and managed to patch together a team with top up players from several lower division clubs and a few ex-players in Luke De Nys, Jesse Pukullus and Todd Billing and club conditioning coach James Nightingale answering the call.

The Pies went down 19.12-126 to 2.4-16.

A goalless first half reflected the nature of the team but the Pies never gave in and in the second half restricted the Panthers to 7 goals while snaring two goals themselves.

A highlight was a goal to defender Sean McEvoy in his return match from injury after receiving three 50 metre penalties to go from half back to the goalsquare --he couldn't miss!!

Luke De Nys had a fine game in defence in his first and last for the season and forced the question to be asked of "what might have been?". Brady Allen also worked hard in defence and not surpisingly another defender in Jamie Page also had plenty to do in another consistent performance.

Stand-in skipper Bryce Crossley again had plenty of the ball in midfield and led from the frontand will be a warm favourite to add a second JB Medal to his trophy cabinet. Joshua White has been a fine recruit this year and again had a busy game on ball and veteran Sean Mewing was a workhorse in trying to stem the tide early in the match.

Despite the 110 point loss coach Craig Allen was pleased with the effort shown by his team, especially after half time, but skill errors and turnovers were pounced on by a strong Morningside team who made the Pies pay on the scoreboard.

This was the final outing in what was a tough season for the reserves in 2017

Colts head into finals with confidence

The Colts wrapped up the home and away season this weekend with a hard fought win over ladder leaders Morningside on Saturday morning. The young Magpies ran out 13 point winners in what always promised to be a close and physical contest.  Having twice taken care of the ladder leaders in the final 6 rounds, the Pies will go into a tight finals series with plenty of confidence.

The Pies won the toss and went with the wind and lead by 5 points at quarter time. Unfortunately, in the second the Panthers were able to make better use of the advantage and kicked 5 goals to 2 to be 18 point leaders at half time. The Magpies knuckled down after break, closed in on the Panthers and trimmed the deficit to be down by 13 at the final change. Few gave the Magpies much hope running into the steadily growing breeze but the boys dug deep and put together a 5 goal to one final quarter which saw them take top spot on the ladder moving into the bye next week, and guaranteed of a Top 2 finish.

Young mid Caleb Franks made a scintillating return to the Colts brushing would be tacklers off with ease and kicking 3 handy goals from the midfield. He adds a touch of class to the already stacked midfield lead by Max Webber and Jacob Sheath. Abdullah Haddad was once again in everything this week and is proving a nightmare for opposition defenses. With Jack Austin and Hamish Campbell up and firing it makes for a tricky forward line to try and curtail. Whitlam Biship and Zac Stegemeyer got the job done against their highly fancied opponents in the back line and are getting great support from Sam DeNys, Tristan Dowdy and Ethan Sivijs who have all hit form at the right time of year.

The boys now get a well earned rest and will use it to refresh, recover and get ready for what should be a fantastic finals series.

Coopers Friday Footy Review

Andrew Thomson

The Woodsmen headed north on Friday to take on Zillmere for a spot in the 2017 Grand Final, and in a tight tussle with plenty of lead changes they were unable to hold on to the lead going down by 5 points after a late goal from Zillmere went unanswered.

Already missing key personnel in Sam Curtis and Andrew Thomson from the midfield, the Woodies were rocked late by the withdrawal of Tim McEvoy on game day and Matty Prior not getting up from a shoulder injury.  Combined with captain Sean Toohey and Elliott Heath nursing hamstring injuries, the Woodies were testing their depth.

The Woodies started strongly and were getting on top in the middle, and despite kicking into a strong breeze in the opening quarter - were able to put the opening 2 goals on the board.  However Zillmere struck back with 2 of their own before both sides kicked goals in red time to leave the Woodies with a handy 1 point lead at quarter time after kicking into the breeze.

The Eagles were good enough to kick one early in the 2nd against the breeze before the Woodies took control of the game for the rest of the quarter, but in what has been a theme in tight losses to Zillmere this year - weren't able to take their chances - missing several simple opportunities for goal and also failing to score at all despite dominance around the ball and in field position.  However, in the end the Woodies took an 8 point lead into the half-time break.

Woods was a strong presence around the ball, while Davis was throwing himself at contests and his tackling pressure was superb.  Sam Long and Scott Matthews in defence were well on top, as was Andrew Bell on the dangerous Zillmere full-forward.  Unfortunately Paul Eaton failed to return from a shoulder injury in the first quarter, and young Ryan Christopher also didn't make it back after half-time due to injury.  As a result, with 2 men down the Woodies knew they were in for a tough 2nd half.

Once again, the Woodies were strong into the breeze in the 3rd quarter and after 2 of the opening 3 goals of the quarter - held a match high 14 point lead with 10 minutes to go in the quarter.  However, in what would prove to be a telling burst -  Zillmere put the breeze at their backs to good use and kicked 4 unanswered goals to take a 10 point lead into the final break.

The final term started with promise as the Woodies kicked the opening 2 with the breeze at their backs to take a 3 point lead.  The match then became an arm wrestle with both teams failing to hit the scoreboard for 10 minutes, but the Magpies enjoying field position advantage on the back of the breeze.  However, there was a twist in the tail as the Eagles pushed forward and kicked 2 behinds to make the margin just 1 point with 3 minutes to play and a draw was well and truly on the cards.

As the clock ticked down, Zillmere pushed the ball forward for one last shot and a hurried kick appeared headed out of bounds or potentially for a behind to tie up the scores before a vicious sideways bounce Shane Warne would be proud of managed to sneak through for a goal and put Zillmere in front with less than a minute on the clock.  The Eagles managed to lock the ball in the middle to their credit and the siren sounded to the despair of a gallant and undermanned Woodsmen side.

PLACE PREVIEW - MAGPIES LOOK TO FINISH YEAR ON HIGH

MAGPIES KEEN TO END SEASON ON A POSITIVE NOTE

The Western Magpies will be looking to emulate last week’s effort when they take on finals bound Morningside at Hawthorne on Saturday.

Recent encounters with Morningside have generally been hard fought with the game up fro grabs late, only for an inexperienced Magpie outfit to let them slip late.  However if the Pies can take the same intensity into the match that they displayed last week against ladder leader Labrador then they will give themselves a chance at an upset.

Despite the Pies now being out of the finals race, coach Brydan Morgan maintained standards and dropped Brady Allen and Jake de Winter for disciplinary reasons –  missing training without a valid excuse —and brought in strong young forward Jeremy deRooy for his first senior match and veteran Gabe McKinnon for his first senior match of 2017. Also in are Redlands listed Jack Goodall and young tall Matt Mazarolle.

Dom Beer misses with a shoulder injury and 16 year old forward/midfielder Caleb Franks returns to the Colts to prepare for finals when the young Pies meet the Panthers in a 1 v 2 top of the table clash at 9.30 am on Saturday—well worth an early start to the footy.

The injured Drew Mitchell, Charlie Pershouse and Lachie Dennis did not come up and will sit out the final match of the season. Brodie Easton passed the concussion test on Thursday night and will take his place in the side.

The versatile Goodall adds to the line up as he can play back or forward and young DeRooy gets his chance after consistent Reserves form. He can take a big grab and despite a somewhat awkward kicking style is an accurate kick for goal.

The Pies’ engine room of Gareth Crawford, Ben Jaenke-Cain, Tom Ielasi and Logan Murray were instrumental in the Pies fightback last week and with ruckmen Aaron Highlands and Liam Dwyer both in good form the Pies will need all of them on song to match the experienced Morningside on-ball brigade.

With Franks and de Winter both out, the goalkicking options will fall to Goodall, Riley Easton, DeRooy and Brenton Saunders with the dangerous Val Pope always able to bob up with a few majors.

The Morningside tall forwards posed a major problem for the Pies late in the game a month ago and Mr Reliable Harry Marshall and the resurgent Matt Dillon will have a big job curtailing the Panthers key forwards.

The move of stand-in skipper Matt Davis and Luke Mitchell to the wings has rejuvenated both and they have been key players in recent weeks for the Pies and offer another route to goal.

The task in front of the Pies is daunting but with only pride to play for the Pies will be keen to end the season on a winning note and put a dent in the Panthers confidence leading into the finals.

The Western Magpies Reserves are on the receiving end of a long injury list in the club and will go into their final match against top side Morningside with an understrength team.

While the Pies were well beaten on the scoreboard last match it was only one poor quarter that brought them undone.

With a young and inexperienced team lapses in concentration are bound to happen and it won’t get any easier on Saturday.

The Pies do have senior player in Brady Allen in the side  which should give them a lift. Also in are Sean McEvoy,  and Luke de Nys, Jesse Pukullus, James Nightingale and Todd Billing all for their first games this year

Out are skipper Gabe McKinnon, young forward Jeremy deRooy and half back Matt Mazarolle  all to the Seniors, ruckman Geoff Gibb with a hand injury,  half forward Rory Johnson (knee) and Tom Cooper and Reid Dobson.

Stand-in skipper Bryce Crossley has had a consistent season and will be keen to finish off in style after what has been a long and somewhat disappointing season for the Reserves.

The on-ball brigade of Josh Uebergang, Sean Mewing and Josh White will need to work hard for the Pies to get first use of the football. Uebergang has been a good find for the Pies in his first year of footy and has worked hard in every game, while White has also had a consistent season.

McEvoy is looking forward to a game at last after a long period out with a back injury and a move forward will please him.

The Pies have a tough task in front of them and coach Craig Allen will ask his charges for one last effort to try to finish the season off on a positive note.
