COLTS MINOR PREMIERS
The Western Magpies Colts have topped the QAFL Colts ladder and are Minor Premiers. As a result of a final round bye, they have inadvertently been forced into a fortnight off from football. Despite this, with a number of players nursing niggles they will have enjoyed the first week of the finals series off as they watched Morningside defeat Broadbeach over the weekend to confirm their opponents for next week.
The Pies had a 12-4 record and finished a game clear ofearly ladder leader Morningside who faltered in several matches at the tail end of the season, including twice going down to the Pies in the final 6 weeks.
The Pies came from behind to overcome Morningside by 3 goals in their round 17 clash a fortnight ago to go 4 points clear on top of the ladder but with the Pies having a last round bye and the Panthers having a superior percentage all they needed was a win in the final round to top the ladder.
It was not to be as the third placed Broadbeach defeated Morningside in the final round of the season before this result was comprehensively reversed in the first final this week with Morningside winning convincingly.
Coach Reid Dobson has his charges firing at the right time of the season and pleasingly will have virtually a full squad to pick from for the first time this season to hit the finals at full tilt.
Coach Dobson has put his charges through some solid workouts in lieu of playing the game and with the help of the senior playing group, some modified practice matches have been played over the past 10 days.
After a minor mid season slump where the Pies dropped a few close ones, they have been a picture of consistency - and come into the finals with plenty of winning momentum.
