2023 - JUNIOR & YOUTH PRESENTATION DAY - Saturday October 7

The 2023 Junior Presentation Day was held on Saturday October 7, and there were some weary heads walking into the club backing up from the Senior Presentation Night the evening before!

The weather threatened, but thankfully cleared up and it was another great day MC’d by Justin Dickinson to celebrate a fantastic 2023 season. Sadly the much sought after yearbooks weren’t ready due to some ‘production delays’ so some of the formalities are still to come.

Life Membership - Mel Beswick 2023

At the Senior Presentation Night on Friday, October 6 - Mel Beswick was inducted as a Life Member of Sherwood Football Club in recognition of his extraordinary service to the club since 1962.

It would be easy to speak about “Bunter’s” contribution to the club over the years, but when reading through club history a few years back that was distributed by the late great Shane Bridley, there was a story in a 1983 edition of the “Magpie Chatter” entitled “Personality of the Month” with Mel Beswick as the subject. The author was none other than the incomparable Peggy Peirce, and we quickly filed the article hoping to use it in circumstances like this in the future.

Keeping in mind that this article documents his service to the club just up until 1983, and 40 years later he is now part of our volunteer grounds crew and raffle ticket selling extraordinaire.

Our ‘Personality of the month’ joined Sherwood Districts only 6 years after its inception, as a 12 year old in the Magpies Under 13 side.  He is now the longest continuing player in the club, as well as being one of our keenest clubmen.

He played in Sherwoods u13s in 1962 and 1963, the latter year under George Negus (of 60 minutes fame). He was selected in the QLD Primary Schools sides in 1962 and 1963 and in 1964 was a member of the Queensland Secondary school team and won the best & fairest.  It was in this year that Sherwood won their first ever u15 Premiership and he was a member of that team, coached by Maurie Macnamee. Known as the ‘famous 15s’, they just crept into the finals on %, then played back to back drawn Preliminary finals against Wilston Grange, finally at the third attempt, beating them by several goals in a game played at Limestone Park in Ipswich. They then went on to defeat the unbeaten Windsor Zillmere side in the Grand Final which they won in just the last few minutes of the game.  He was awarded Best in Finals in 1965

The club formed its first u17 team in 1966 and he was a prominent member of the team.  Coached by Ted Gibson, this team was noted for its club spirit, and had achieved a 100% attendance rate at club working bees.  The following year he was a member of Sherwood’s first u17A Premiership side, coached by Maurie Macnamee and that year he was awarded the ‘most versatile player’ award.  At this stage it should be noted that he was a player that could take his position anywhere on the field and give a good account of himself. He has probably played most of his football in the rucks and backs.

During his years as a junior, he always came to the fore when help was needed with a project such as working bees, collating the club magazine and raffle selling.

He went to Western Districts and played in their Premiership Colts sides of 1968 and 1969. He found time in 1969 go manage Sherwood’s u9A’s Premiership team, also coached by Maurie.  In 1970 he played Reserves and Seniors with Wests and in 1971 and 1972 he was straight back to Sherwood playing in the firsts.

In 1973 he belonged to Sherwood’s premiership reserves team and in 1974 he captained the side.  In 1975, he won the Reserves most consistent trophy and the following year he was the vice captain of the Premiership winning reserves and again won the most consistent trophy.

He was VC of the Reserves from 1977 through to 1983.  In that time the team won Premierships in 1981 and 1982.  During this time, he helped the club in team management capacity, on sub-committees and assistant coaching.  This season (1983) he is manager of the u17 side coached by Greg Adams.

He had planned to retire as players this season because of a back complaint which has been troubling him for some time; however early in the season when he saw his help was needed in the reserves, he got back on the training track and has been a regular ever since.  This move is typical of his attitude.  A TEAM man and Club man first and last.

He has watched the club grow from 4 or 5 teams in 1962 to our present compliment of teams and our QAFL entry.  Much progress has been made in all directions and he has been a part of it all, right through.  I am sure Sherwood Districts can count on his continued support for many more years and when he does ‘hang up the boots’ he’ll be there somewhere shouldering a responsibility and quietly ‘lennding a hand’.

Well – what can we say!?  Peggy Peirce sure was a wise woman, as here we are now precisely 40 years later since that article was written, and the great man is still here and helping maintain the playing surface, leaf blowing the beer garden areas and still ‘lending a hand’

It is our great pleasure to confirm Mel ‘Bunter’ Beswick as a Life Member of Sherwood Districts Australian Football Club, recognition that is long overdue!

2023 - SENIOR PRESENTATION NIGHT - FRIDAY OCTOBER 6

The Senior Presentation Night incorporating the Bill Peirce Medal & Deidre Jakavicius Medal Counts was held on Friday the 6th of October at the stunning Victoria Park Marquee Venue.

With over 200 guests in attendance, it was the first time the prestigious event had been held ‘off site’ and the evening as a fantastic success, with MC Pat O’Neill putting on a great show.

It was a fantastic evening with in excess of 20 Life Members in attendance, great representation from the board, major sponsors and the broader playing group across 6 x Senior Teams.

Major achievements throughout 2023 included the following:

4 out of 6 Senior Teams played finals, including 3 making the Preliminary Final. Current and former Magpie coaches continued to excel, including Drew Mitchell who was the midfield coach for the Allies historic undefeated national title and Brisbane Lions Academy Level 3 Midfield Coach. Mitch Merritt and James Harrison assisted with Brisbane Lions Academy Level 1 and Level 2 programs and Paul Grentell was part of the QAFL State Team coaching panel and finally Brett McEvoy continued his long term role as the QLD Schoolboys u12 coach.

Two former Magpies played against each other in the AFL with Samson Ryan at Richmond taking on Jaspa Fletcher at Brisbane at the GABBA and Jaspa remarkably went all the way to the AFL Grand Final in his first season of AFL footy. Our current Magpies also featured at VFL level, with Bruce Reville, Riley Greene, Owen Collins, Josh Cooper and Elijah Glass all continuing the Magpies commitment to player development. Jaspa Fletcher wasn’t the only Magpie on the MCG on Grand Final day, with Tom Gillett playing in the AFL Futures u17 game earlier in the day and performing incredibly well. Earlier in the year, Tom was joined by Ryan Gilder and Will Munro in the QLD u17 side who took on Victoria in a nailbiting loss after the siren.

Club Captain Will Fletcher joined Bruce Reville in the QAFL State side, while Emma McDonald was selected in the QLD South representative team for the annual intrastate game.

In the Brisbane Lions Level 3 Academy program the Magpies had Jacinta Baldwick, Georgia Lwin, Ryan Gilder, Tom Gillett, Jules Cruice, Owen Collins, Elijah Glass and Jayden McCaulay featuring, while Liam Hude and Tristen Meekin also would have been prominent had it not been for season ending injury.

In the Level 2 Lions Academy Program, Jack Harrison, Jack Slater, Will Munro and Harrison Bridge featured in the national carnival, while Isaac Olver was selected but missed out due to injury and Harry Thomson missed final selection. Stella Scott, Daisy Minz and Sophie David also featured with both teams securing the national title. Special mention to Harrison Bridge, who was selected in the u16 All-Australian Team and made his QAFL Senior debut aged just 15. Stella Scott was selected in the QLD u15 Schoogirls team, while Harry Thomson fought through serious injury to still manage selection in the QLD u15 Schoolboys squad as a shadow player.

Finally, a huge thanks to everyone involved in the club in 2023, with special mentions to our volunteer grounds crew of Greg Adams, Rob Lawson, John Green, Mel Beswick, Bill Taylor and Will Pearce as the regulars alongside a broad mix of helpers. Doc Thompson for his continuing support of the club, Lindsay Trigar and Cody Fullarton and their support crews, Kev Kluver, David Bartlett, Des Lashman and the rest of the ‘Magpie Mafia’ and of course the match day support of Craig Nipperess, Mark Spry, Jess Barker, Pat O’Neill, Damian & Lachie Haber, Phil Kelemen and Chris Fozard.

Finally a very special acknowledgement of Maurie MacNamee, Gary Shaw, Bill Peirce and Warren Selvage who were inducted into the AFLQ Hall of Fame, and the famous Sherwood side of 1975-82 who were inducted as a team after a remarkable 8 Premierships in a row.

A special mention to Will Fletcher who won his 4th consecutive senior Best & Fairest, the first 4 time winner in club history and naturally this also means the first person ever to win 4 in a row.

Russell Green Memorial Trophy - Coach of the Year

With 4 of 6 teams playing finals, and 3 making it to a Prelim, it was a hot field in 2023 for this award.  It’s also a hot field, because we have been so successful in continually being able to attract high quality and committed coaches to our club.

This guy joined the club in 2022, never had anything to do with the Magpies, but turned up for a kick and ended up a Premiership player, and he even managed to get his picture on the wall!

In 2023, he embarked on a new journey, volunteering his time to join our Womens program as an assistant coach.  It quickly became apparent that he was ideally suited to the role, with his ability to pass on his knowledge in an easily understood and clear/concise manner.  Feedback from players and fellow coaches speaks volumes for his positive impact.

Being an astute thinker and having decades of playing experience don’t mean anything unless you are able to impart this knowledge in a positive way, and we’re pleased to confirm that Ben Finlayson was certainly able to do this. 

Shane Bridley Memorial Shield - Senior Club Player of the Year

The Magpies are thrilled to confirm this year that it was one of the most difficult decisions to find a winner for this award.  This is incredibly pleasing, as it means the volume of players going above and beyond to support the club is growing.

Our 2022 winner Connor Bulley was back in the mix, taking on the head coaching role of u15 Division 1 and leading them from Division 2 in 2022, into the finals and a Top 6 finish in Division 1, 2023.

Sarah Grant did an incredible job with the u11 Girls team, Olivia Bell was again a huge presence across Auskick, under 15s and generally helping out with youth girls teams.  Stella Gracey was fantastic as an assistant coach for the u17 Div 1 girls and a big pat on the back to the Senior women’s group in general for being so supportive of junior girls footy at Sherwood.

Our senior mens captain Will Fletcher, dragged himself out of bed regularly on Sunday after being bashed around stoppages for 2 hours on a Saturday afternoon to help with the u17Div 1 team as a runner, coach and mentor.  Deng Arok turned up to assist in various age groups and before he knew it, was handed a whistle and was umpiring u13 games and Aidan D’Roza was spotted a few times keeping stats for our talented youth teams and of course Jack James and Brady Allen who spent almost all of the season injured, but turned up to training and match days almost without fail to support the lads in a tough year. 

However, there had to be a winner from all these great contenders and this year we landed on someone we think is incredibly worthy.  From turning up regularly to u15 and u17 girls games to provide support and guidance, making appearances at Auskick, appearing in promo shoots for sponsors or media at a moments notice, regularly cleaning the dressing rooms with some of her teammates on a Friday arvo and she was also a wonderful coach and mentor to our u13 Division1 girls team who after a very tough start to the year, pushed all the way to the Grand Final only to lose by less than a kick in a heart stopper. 

Kevin Kluver Award - Senior Club Person of the Year

“MC Pat” as he is now known, was a workhorse for the club in 2023. His 4th season with the unenviable task of taking on the Manager duties for the Woodsmen, he has somehow managed to turn a shambolic group of keen footballers into a somewhat organised group of lads. However, his role at the club in 2023 went far beyond this, culminating in a fantastic “Big Freeze” day where he took it upon himself to both generate, and then subsequently entertain a huge home crowd to cheers us home in a 1 point win vs the Morningside Panthers in the QAFL Senior game. Pat researched and profiled all the senior players across the Men’s and Women’s squads for the day, acted as ground announced and entertainer and rallied the troops to cheer us home for a fantastic win.

Vale - Andrew "Chisel" Scott

The Magpies and broader Brisbane & Hunter Valley football community are devastated to mourn the loss of Andrew 'Chisel' Scott and his wife Lynan in the recent NSW bus tragedy.

'Chisel' first and foremost was an absolutely fantastic bloke who touched many lives through his journey in footy and made every club lucky enough to have him around a better place for it.

One of many great juniors to come from the Jindalee Jags, he arrived at the Magpies in 2003 with his older brother Luke aka 'Jonesy' and went on to be part of the u18 Division 1 Premiership side captained by David Hamill.

A strong bodied midfielder, he made his senior debut in 2004 and quickly caught the attention of the footy community with his combative style that was hard, yet scrupulously fair. Always popular with teammates and the opposition alike, he was a natural leader and a fan favourite.

With the Magpies relegation to Pineapple Hotel Cup in 2005 and his ascension to the QLD u18 Teal Cup side, Chisel made the move with some Magpie teammates to Mount Gravatt to play State League and became a decorated player as Club Captain, Best & Fairest Winner and Premiership player, as well as captaining the QLD u21 team. He also had stints in the WAFL with Subiaco, NEAFL with Redland and more recently at the Singleton Roosters where they no doubt could not believe their luck when Chisel rolled through the door to become their Captain/Coach and play over 100 games, winning a Premiership, Best & Fairest and playing a starring role for the Hunter Valley Inter League team, with many from the Roosters declaring him the best to have pulled on their jumper.

Andrew was a physio by trade and the Scott family had of course established themselves as much loved members of the Singleton community as they settled their lives in a new town and the Magpies send their love to the Roosters and broader Singleton community.

The entire Magpie community send their condolences to parents Brett & Sue, siblings Marty, Luke & Amanda, their two infant sons and the extended family of Lynan Scott on this most heartbreaking and sudden loss.

Vale Ross 'Rocco' Stewart

Vale – Ross ‘Rocco’ Stewart

The Sherwood Football club sadly acknowledge the recent passing of Life Member - Ross ‘Rocco’ Stewart. Rocco began playing at the Magpies as a 7 year old and progressed through the ranks to be a 6 time senior premiership player through over 100 senior games.

Ross represented QLD at both u15 and u17 level and was also an All-Australian in the u17s. We won the Best & Fairest in the 1977 Premiership side under legendary coach Les Foote and was Runner up in 1976. He was also invited to Richmond for pre-season at the tender age of 17.

Playing through the midfield, wing and half forward, he was highly skilled, hard at the footy and was one of the best kicks on either foot to have played at the club. His playing career was then sadly cut short by chronic ankle injuries and he quickly turned his attention to the next generation of talent at the Magpies, coaching junior football at the Magpies for many years, before also moving to the Calamvale Leopards with good friend Chris Arnold where he continued to coach for many years.

Rocco was joined by two brothers in Greg & Leroy who also played junior and senior football at the Magpies and his parents Glynn & Maureen Stewart were giants of the football club and both Life Members. Sister Michele also spent many years at the club helping the Stewarts and managing junior teams.Daughters Kate & Jessica also produced wonderful grandchildren that Rocco doted on in his later years with great pride.

After fighting bravely and valiantly for the better part of the last decade against multiple types of cancer, lung removal and brain tumours, he now came to a well earnt rest and will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

The wake will be held at Sherwood Football Club following the funeral.

The genesis of the ‘Lavender’ nickname was that David was the 3rd of the Green brother to arrive to play for the Magpies with the first brother earning the ironic name ‘Bluey’, the 2nd brother getting the simple nickname of ‘Greeny’ so when David arrived, club legend and team manager at the time Craig Nipperess dubbed him ‘Lavender’ to keep with the colour scheme and the nickname stuck, with almost all teammates from that era still calling him by the name ‘Lavender’ much to his chagrin 15 years on!

HEAD COACH ANNOUNCEMENT - 2023 YOUTH TEAMS

Winner of the 2022 Des Lashman Trophy as Sherwood Magpies Junior Coach of the Year, our very own Sean Toohey is back at the helm of the new boys age group of u13s in 2023.

Sean has been a player or coach at the Magpies since 1993 when he joined the Magpies to play u14 footy and played in an u17 Division 1 Premiership and was part of the drought breaking Division 1 Senior Premiership side in 2006 before acting as the runner for the 2008 Premiership team.

In 2009, Sean was captain of the inaugural "Woodies" team (Previously known as 3rds, Low Rollers and Sherwood Old Boys) under coach and Grogan medalist, Bill Pierce. The team made the grand final and what a day it was for Sean. His wife gave birth to twins in the morning, and he ran out to lead the Woodies to the flag later in the day! He captained a 2nd Premiership undefeated in 2014 and secretly plans to pull the boots on a couple more times each year!

Sean was assistant coach to his teams in 2017, 18 & 19, before stepping up to be the head coach of the mighty U10s in 2020, u11s in 2021 and u12s in 2022 when they pushed all the way to Grand Final day. He lives and breathes footy, and has stepped up for the club again in 2023 to take the role as head coach for the U13s.

He will be assisted by a raft of quality assistant coaches and we look forward to a great year in 2023.

The Sherwood Magpies are delighted to announce Co-Coaches for our very lucky Under 13 Girls age group in 2023.

Abi Ashford is a QAFLW Senior Premiership Player with Yeronga and arriving back at Sherwood in 2022, quickly became part of the furniture as she attended the club on an almost daily basis to train and/or walk the dog!

Growing up in WA with 3 brothers, she was surrounded by footy and an accomplished basketballer and hockey player, Abi had originally joined in for the 2020 Pre-Season, but despite not having played footy before - had clear ability and was rightly directed to nearby Yeronga to play QAFLW where she became a Senior QAFLW Premiership player in her first season.

Returning to her local club Sherwood in 2022, she had immediate impact as Runner Up in the Senior Best & Fairest. Not content with starring on the footy field, Abi is also the guitarist and back up vocalist in the indie-pop-rock band Flag Duty and spends some of her spare time coaching the next generation footballers in the Brisbane Girls Grammar footy team and now lends her expertise to the next generation of Magpies.

Right alongside her will be Jie Walsh, who has been a long term footy person and has a board member at the Magpies since 2020 as well as assisting with coaching and managing various teams such as u11 Girls, u12 Boys, u13 Girls and u14 Boys in recent years. With his experience in footy going back 10+ years including working at clubs in Bundaberg and Cairns, Jie is also an experienced manager and leader of people and will be a great addition to the u13 Girls coaching team in 2023.

The Sherwood Magpies are delighted to announce the appointment of Connor Bulley as Head Coach of the u15 Boys age group in 2023.

An accomplished player who has played for the Brisbane Lions at VFL level and is a QAFL Senior Player at the Magpies, Bulley decided to expand his footy in 2022 and balance his playing commitments with coaching where he joined the u14 Boys squad as an assistant coach and runner and became an integral part of the Premiership winning team.

His 2022 experiences saw him officially bitten by the coaching bug, and Connor is the ideal mentor to our strong u15 age group in 2023 as they move into Division 1 football.

The Sherwood Magpies are delighted to confirm the re-appointment of Wil Ivinson as Head Coach of u15 Girls for 2023.

A Life Member of the club, Wil has been associated with the Magpies for 32 years starting with the club as a junior way back in 1990, after arriving from Darwin. He had a successful playing career across 24 years through to 2014, culminating in a Premiership win with the Woodsmen in his last game.

Through that time, he also coached at the U16 and U18 level, winning two Division 1 grand finals and has been an integral part of the club over many years with his leadership and mentoring of countless future Senior players. He is also a qualified trainer and acted as a volunteer in this role across all senior grades, as well as having experience with several AFL clubs.

In 2016, the next generation Wil Ivinson (Jnr) started his footy career at Sherwood. With his son now playing at the club he loves, Wil became heavily involved in junior coaching - guiding U6s, U8s, U9s and U10s through 5 enjoyable seasons before he joined in helping the u13 Girls in 2021 and took the head coaching reigns of the u15 Girls in 202.

Wil brings a lot of structure and a lot of fun to his training sessions which brings out the best in all the kids he coaches and this was recognised in 2019 when he was deservedly awarded the Sherwood Junior Coach of the Year award.

The Sherwood Magpies are delighted to confirm the appointment of Damian Haber to the role of u17 Boys Head Coach. Haber will play an important role as a conduit between our u17 Division 1 Program, QAFL Colts and QAFL Senior squad as the Magpies continue to focus strongly on the development of local talent for QAFL and AFL Football.

With a lifelong association with footy, Haber grew on on the Gold Coast where he played Junior and Senior Football at Southport, before professional commitments saw him move to Victoria and 3 x Knee Reconstructions later his footy career was over in a flash.

Moving back to Queensland to raise his family, he got back into football coaching juniors at Moggill Mustangs from 2017-2019 and then took the reigns of the Magpies u12 Division 1 team in 2021 and the Premiership winning u14s in 2022. A keen educator and mentor, Damian is moving up to the u17s to create stability in young Magpie players transition from youth to QAFL Senior footy, with intentions to coach the u17 squad for 3+ years while also acting as the Senior QAFL Team Runner, creating a consistent and familiar face for young players.

Please come down to meet and greet + grab a footy and go for a kick on the main oval. We'd like to see you in readiness for the 2023 season - both existing and new players.

INAUGURAL SHERWOOD WOMEN’S RESERVES COACH RE-COMMITS

After leading the Reserves all the way to the Grand Final in their first season, Reserves Coach Anthony Sacco has signed on for another year at the helm.

His footy journey is vast and unlike many, has been a global experience with his coaching and playing experience spreading through the UK, US, Philippines and even China!

'Sax' commenced playing footy as a 10 year old in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and continued all the way up the the VAFA in his university days before his career took him abroad, where he continued to immerse himself in footy wherever he could.

His most recent coaching gig before taking on the Magpies in 2021 was with the Philippines Eagles men's team. A team composed of expats from around Australia, as well as local talent. They played in a domestic competition and played matches against teams from around Asia.

Sax says "the great thing about this role was the ability to teach and train people and players who had not had the opportunity to grow up with the game so seeing them advance was rewarding. I was also able to implement strategies and a game style that centred around a certain brand but also made the most of the players and their varied skill level and experience."

With the growth in Women's footy and so many taking up the opportunity to play without a junior career behind them, this experience abroad gives Sax a unique skillset to continue to take the reins of the QFAW Div 1 Reserves at the Magpies.
