PLACE PREVIEW - SHERWOOD IN CRUCIAL CLASH vs ROOS

Sherwood will be wary of a dangerous Maroochydore when the Pies travel to the Sunshine Coast for the first time in years to meet a team that has been very competitive in their first season back at QAFL level. Maroochydore perhaps were unlucky not to take the scalp of ladder leaders Morningside last week, leading through the first 3 changes before being run down. Combined with a 1 point loss to the Vultures and a Round 1 victory, they have been at home at QAFL level without a doubt and will be looking for another home win.

The Pies are fourth on a congested mid-ladder cluster of clubs and a win will consolidate them in fourth and almost guarantee a finals berth. A loss will put the Magpies back in a bun-fight with other finals aspirants.

The Pies have made two changes to their team that defeated Wilston-Grange last week, with winger Tom Baulch coming in for a straight swap for Bruce Reville, who at 19 has been mysteriously called up to the Brisbane Lions Academy to play a lower standard of football to apparently enhance his draft prospects(?), and Caleb Franks has overcome a minor head knock to replace Zac Collison, who goes back to the Reserves after a quality debut last week.

Samson Ryan was superb in ruck vs Grange but faces a challenge against the Maroochydore ruckman, who is a well credentialed, tough and mobile big man who can dominate games.

Liam  Dawson was back kicking a decent bag of goals last week and Claye Beams looks dangerous across half forward.

Will Fletcher and Ryan Harwood are both in good form in the midfield and down back Ethan Sivijs grows in stature each week with his speed to close down dangerous attacks and plays the third man up to perfection. Luca Winton was back to his best last week with close checking, but also  attacking the ball to launch attacks out of the back half. David Lewis was Also back to his best last week and Jack Goodall found form after a slow start to the season. 

Rain is forecast and from all reports the home team are a strong bodied outfit so the Magpies must get on top early to establish scoreboard pressure if they are to win and consolidate fourth place on the ladder.

Recycling Metal Industries - QAFL Reserves Preview

Sherwood Reserves  will be looking to open their 2020 account when they take on bottom placed Maroochydore on Saturday.

Both sides are winless, with the home side having struggled in the stronger QAFL competition. Sherwood have been competitive but one bad quarter (or one bad half last week) have resulted in 5 losses this season to date.

However, importantly the Pies can still make the finals if they win their last three matches and that is a distinct possibility as they play against three other lower table teams in the final three rounds. 

The Pies have made 4 changes to last week's team, with Zac Collison, Macauley Lonergan, Hamish Campbell and Chris Davis coming in to boost the team. Collison and Campbell strengthen the backline, Lonergan provides pace in the middle of the ground and up forward and Davis can play a role forward or back with his tenacity, fitness and pace.

Out are Peter Kilroy, Sam Mehari, Alex Davila and Lachlan Pearson. 

Collison was a somewhat unlucky omission after his senior debut where he performed his role beautifully, but with a settled backline, it was a case of last in first out. However, his inclusion strengthens the Reserves significantly while the senior experienced Lonergan also provides some spark.

Important day for the Ressies in 2020, lets get to the ground early to cheer them home.

TRADECRETE Group - Colts Match Preview

It’s a huge game for the Sherwood Colts first up at 10am this morning against competition newcomers the Maroochydore Roos. The 7th placed Colts are yet to hit their straps, yet we are already in the back straight of the home and away season and todays game vs the 6th placed Roos is a huge game in the jostle for finals spots.

With traffic mayhem around on the Bruce Highway, the lads will be looking to hit the road early with a big day ahead of them.

A big focus this week will be the contested ball. Win the ball at the source or bury any opposition player who gets it. The boys have responded well at training, as they always do and it will be exciting to see how they respond in this mornings game.

Oscar Murphy comes out of the side this week due to shin soreness, and Jonty Macdougall follows suit with hip soreness. Both made the decision to sit out this week, showing the team is always bigger than the individual. It’s a big sacrifice in a short season, and some quality replacements come into the side in Connor Bulley and Lawson Campbell.

Each week the coaching staff have been adding a piece to the puzzle as they look to build senior ready footballers, and the Colts side now get another step closer to realising how good they can truly be.

REGIS AGED CARE CHELMER - GUT FEELINGS

• The Magpies at last put together close to four quarters of football to win well in a danger game against Wilston-Grange on Saturday.

• Gut Feelings says "close to four quarters" as the Pies were again slow to start and were 2 goals down in the first 5 minutes of the match. The Magpies quickly regrouped to boot the next 5 goals to establish a lead they never looked like relinquishing.

• It wasn't always the case in the previous 3 rounds against quality opposition as the Pies found it hard to put four quarters of football together. The Pies  improved against Broadbeach but it was down to a 15 minute lapse which resulted in the Cats booting 5 goals late in the first quarter and that was basically the difference in the end. 

• One bad quarter  against PBC 3 weeks ago cost them the match despite winning the final three quarters and then playing only one good quarter was never going to cut it against a quality team like Morningside.

• Coach Anthony McDonald has focused on consistency and the ability to apply pressure at the contest for four quarters was the theme prior to the Grange match and again this week as the Magpies take on a dangerous Maroochydore  on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

•  A look at the QAFL ladder shows the top three teams in PBC, Morningside and Broadbeach all undefeated and 2 to 3 games clear of the rest with Sherwood holding down fourth place with 2 wins with Mt Gravatt also on 2 wins. This week's opponent Maroochydore are next with 1 win. Three teams are on 1 win and one team has yet to win so one way to look at the next 3 weeks is as a mini-finals series between the teams placed 4-9 on the ladder. The Pies have played all three top teams and have been competitive and not far off the pace in all three losses.

• So this week's match against Maroochydore  is crucial to the Pies' finals hopes. Maroochydore have been very competitive and are 6th on the ladder and will be desperate to win to consolidate in the top 6. A win for  Sherwood will go close to sealing a finals berth with two rounds to play, so  it will be crucial for the Magpies to start well and get in front so they can dictate proceedings for the rest of the match. 

• Ryan Harwood has had five good matches to date but  Gut Feelings would suggest he has no Grogan Medal votes because he seems invisible to the umpires.

• He gets scragged off the ball all match and against Morningside and Broadbeach  he  was pushed in the back, sat on and held without the ball numerous times without getting a free kick.  It was not quite as bad last week against Wilston-Grange but he still does not get rewarded for being first to the ball in the in-close contests, and one wonders if players of this calibre will play in the QAFL if they are not treated equally

• The umpires have followed the AFL lead and are quick to pounce on holding the ball but maybe holding the man and push in the back get precedence over incorrect disposal especially if an illegal tackle results in the incorrect disposal. 

• Two sons of guns made their Senior debuts for Sherwood on Saturday. Sam St John and Zac Collison came into the side and both played well despite Sam copping an early head knock. Sam was presented his guernsey by multiple premiership player in his father Craig St John and Zac was presented his guernsey by his father, Lindsay Collison, who was on the Brisbane Bears list and played for Wilston-Grange in the 1980s as well as representing Queensland at the 1988 Bi-Centennial Carnival in Adelaide.

•  Aaron Highlands likes to mix it up with his opponents and plays a tight checking and hard- at-the-ball style of game. The “Baby Faced Assassin” has had a few scraps and in Round One had his guernsey ripped to go with 2 guernseys ripped last year. The club is considering a surcharge to his registration fees to pay for the guernsey repairs.  

• Speaking of attire, club veteran Peter Kilroy has turned back to clock to the 1980’s with his Warwick Capper-like   tight shorts. Doesn’t seem to have affected him as he is still playing good footy in the Reserves.

•  Claye Beams showed a lot of courage to return to the ground after half time against Broadbeach after suffering what appeared to be a very serious facial injury late in the second quarter on Saturday.  While Beam's injuries were significant they were not as bad as first thought and no-one would have begrudged him not returning to the fray. However he did play on and was a good player in the second half with three goals that at one stage led the Pies fightback.

• Tall ruckman Samson Ryan played as dominant a ruckman's game as you would wish to see, completely dominating at centre bounces then marking the ball all over the ground as well as winning ground ball contests. He also booted a goal and has a long boot and at 19 years old he has a huge upside  as he continues to learn the ruckman's art. On Saturday's showing he will draw some interest from AFL talent scouts.

• Incredibly, Bruce Reville has been lost to Sherwood this week to play in an u18 academy game for the Brisbane Lions, whilst aged 19… Reville has played 2 seasons of academy football, and the standard of the QAFL is several levels above what goes on in the academies. Once again, proving impossible for players to build continuity as they bounce between teams and one wonders what recruiters will see when he plays against kids for a 3rd year straight, when he could continue to show his wares at a much higher level of QAFL footy.

•  Sherwood Reserves are 0-5  and were disappointing in their 1 point loss to Wilston-Grange. The Pies led by 17 points at one stage but only scored 1 behind in the second half  and 2 ill-disciplined acts gifted the Gorillas 2 goals which cost the Pies dearly.

• In the first 4 rounds the Pies developed a bad habit of 4 goals losses. Like the Seniors, the standard of the Reserves competition has gone up and it is a good standard of football, although Saturday's match did not reach great heights. A young Reserves team (with a few exceptions) has  had one bad quarter in each of its matches which has proved the difference in each loss. 

• Unbelievably the Reserves are only 4 points outside the top six so mathematically can still make the finals with three wins in the last three rounds. Maroochydore Reserves have struggled with the step up to QAFL level ans the Pies will be looking to open their account on Saturday. 

•  The Colts were well beaten by 2019 Premiers Wilston-Grange on Saturday after a solid come-from-behind win the previous week against a strong Broadbeach team. The Pies made too many fundamental errors and Assistant-Coach Bryce Crossley said Grange kicked 8 of their 10 goals from Magpies turnovers.

• It wont get any easier  for the Colts this week as Maroochydore have been very competitive this season and will be tough to beat on their home ground.  

• The Sherwood Women are 3 from 4 after suffering their first defeat on Saturday evening. The Pies gave their supporters  heart palpitations with 2 one-pont wins in the previous 2 matches. Despite the 7 point loss to ladder leaders Beenleigh, in a five team competition with a final four, the women’s team is almost guaranteed a finals berth. The numbers of players in the squad is impressive given this is the first season of the new look Magpies Women's team and with many youngsters in the squad will only get better each game and each season.

• The Pies will be keen to return to the winners list when they travel to Mt Gravatt for a 6.30 pm start on Saturday evening.

• Great to see large numbers of players and supporters stay behind for several hours after matches and it brings a buzz to the club. New club manager John Simpson and the Board have lifted the vibes of the Social Club with good quality food and friendly happy staff.  It has helped bring back many of the club's Old Boys to home matches

• Sherwood Honour Boards have been updated and are  back in the Sportsmans Bar of the club. With the Senior section of the club reverting to the “Sherwood” name quite a few changes had to be made hence the delay in updating the boards. There are still a few gaps in the history,  especially Reserves  but each year the gaps are  closing.

• It will be well worth a look in the Sportsmans Bar area of the club the next time you visit

• The Honour Boards were also uploaded to the Old Boys Facebook page if you want to check them out and will also be uploaded to the club website for viewing at anytime you wish to look at them.

• A reminder the club still has a number of commemorative guernseys available for sale. The guernseys have every Senior, Reserves  and Thirds players and coaches to play for Sherwood, the Western Magpies and the Woodsmen from 1968 to 2018.  Please see Dr Greg Thompson if you want to purchase a guernsey, price is $70 negotiable!! Guernseys will be available for sale at the club's next home game against Surfers Paradise in a fortnight.

• Brydan Morgan, who coached the Magpies for three years in 2017-19, was planning to be a forward observer in Queensland for the Canberra Demons in the NEAFL this year but then an opportunity arose to join Williamstown in the VFL as their defensive line coach under senior coach, ex Hawthorn Star Andrew Collins.  As fate would have  it, Covid-19 put paid to those plans  as like most other football competitions, the VFL season was cancelled.  Brydan was the Pies defensive coach in 2015 and was an assistant coach at Aspley in the NEAFL in 2016 before assuming the Senior Coach role at the Pies.  Brydan at the end of 2019 when he new his contract would not be renewed was still gracious and showed a lot of class when he thanked the Western Magpies for giving him an opportunity to coach at Senior QAFL level. All at Sherwood wish Brydan the best of luck next year whether he remains at Williamstown or continues to coach elsewhere.

• Brydan still takes a keen interest in the Pies games, riding every bump and staying in touch with players, coaches and administrators

• The Woodsmen started the season like a house on fire, but have slowed now with 2 consecutive losses and while they have shown a great ability to attract ex Magpie greats, keeping them on the park has proven difficult. Club Legend Jimmy Rozynski has already been lost to an ACL, while the likes of Dickfos, Crawford and Pope have succumbed to hamstring strains and Lachlan Woods has a damaged shoulder. Other Woodies stalwarts in Curtis, Thomson and several others have also gone down with injury, resulting in the old ‘recruiting black book’ forced into overdrive. If you’re reading this, turn your phone off!

• Great to see youngster Jake Fennelly who has moved over from the Jindalee Jags this year to play Colts establishing himself at the club. Whilst he has been unlucky at the selection table, big Jakey is coaching the u14s with his Colts teammate Abu Kante, and last week took the whistle for the Senior womens game. Great stuff Jake!

• In the close win Jimboomba another club youngster in Sam Edwards took on the umpiring duties, but the footy ops team have since discovered you need to be 16 to umpire senior footy, so despite his excellent efforts, Sam will have to wait 12 months for another crack

• Also involved in coaching youth footy are Reserves players Cam Ferguson and Harry Radcliffe, looking after the u12s and u16s respectively and doing a great job.

• The junior games in recent weeks have had a real local derby flavour, with multiple Sherwood vs Sherwood battles every week, and if its not Sherwood vs Sherwood, then they don;t have to go far taking on Kenmore, Jindalee or Wests most weeks

Recycling Metal Industries - QFAW Match Preview

QFAW Round 5 will see Sherwood make the trek down the M1 to take on Beenleigh at Dauth Park in another top of the table QFAW clash, this time Sherwood the hunted.

Sherwood are set for a challenging and physical contest and must respect that Beenleigh in any grade are always a formidable opponent.

The battle of the two defensive units will be intriguing with Beenleigh boasting the best defensive record in the competition to date conceding only 35 points from 3 games, Sherwood next best with 67 points against also from 3 games. Smarter ball use coming into the forward 50 will be a key focus for the Magpies with efficiency from entries going a long way to kicking a winning score. For Sherwood, keep an eye out for the ever reliable trio of Renee King, Tui Sinclair and Nikki Hancock to provide plenty of run and carry out of the backline.  

There are four changes to the team that took on Jimboomba last week including; Jaimee Newton-Smith (suspension), Kate Lencz (work), Lahnie Cooper (relocated to Weipa for work) and Susie Mobley (injured). Squad mentality has been the focus all season with the inclusions of Jessica Stallard, Jessica Blakey, Jessica Power and Emily McCrae ready to come into the side and make an impact.  

Well done to debutant, Jessica Blakey who comes in for her first game since crossing over from Yeronga. Blakey has really earned her spot in the team having trained consistently while playing on permit for Jindalee.

QAFL Place Preview - Season starts again for Sherwood

The shortened QAFL season starts again for Sherwood when they host the cross town Wilston-Grange at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer today.

With 4 rounds of the 8 round season completed, Sherwood are one of 5 teams on one win and sit in fourth place on the ladder. The Magpies have played the top three teams and should have nabbed a win or two, but some short lapses were costly. Positions 4 to 6 on the ladder are up for grabs so today s the start of a mini-finals campaign for the Pies as they play the other teams in the fight for the last three places available for the finals.

Sherwood selectors have made two forced changes with Billy Johnson missing with a shoulder injury and impressive youngster Jack Briskey called up to Brisbane Lions Academy duties. In comes back pocket Brenton Saunders after missing for one week with soreness and utility Aaron Maricic after impressive Reserves form.

Coach Anthony McDonald will ask his team for a four quarter effort after the Magpies have had inconsistent form in the four matches to date, having at least one bad patch in each game which has cost them a chance of victory in the three losses this season.

He will hope some of the consistency of on-ballers Ryan Harwood and Will Fletcher will rub off on their teammates and needs his midfield to fire from the first bounce.

When the Pies struggle to win the midfield contested ball is the time they give up goals so getting first use of the football is a must if they are to get back to winning football.  Given a fair share of the football, Sherwood’s forward line is capable of kicking a big score with Liam Dawson and Brody Lumber forward targets and Claye Beams capable of kicking a handful.

In a rare event, Luca Winton had a bag kicked on him last week, so he will be keen to be on top at fullback and with support of Ethan Sivijs and Errin Wasley-Black will hope to blanket the Gorilla forwards.

It is a big game for the Pies and a win will put them on the path to a finals berth, a loss puts them back in the chasing pack.

Barbecue Mafia - Reserves Preview

Sherwood Reserves are chasing their first win of the season when they host Wilston-Grange on Saturday. The Magpies have not been far off the mark and like their senior counterparts  have suffered from  one quarter lapses in each of their losses. For the remaining three quarters of their matches the Magpies have matched their opposition.

Wilston-Grange have one win so this is a match the Magpies will be hoping to open their account.

Coach Cory Hopkins has had to make 4 changes to his side with Aaron Maricic promoted to the Seniors and Macauley Lonergan injured,  but he gains key defender Harry Marshall and rover Rory Johnson, both back from injury.

He will look for the continued good form of ruckman-forward Trystan Juffs-King, half forward Sam St John, defenders Sam Hartog and Zac Collison, the ageless Ben Jaenke-Cain and Peter Kilroy and youngsters in Jacob Aurisch, Zane Lovell and Jackson Paynter to lead the side from the first bounce.  

The Magpies are not out of finals contention with a final six instituted this year but need to win all remaining matches to have a chance, so for the Reserves, their  mini-finals series also starts on Saturday.

Carter Capner - Colts Preview

The Colts have a big game this week taking on the reigning premiers in what should be a great contest. The lads had a great performance in Round 4 with a win over the previously undefeated Broadbeach, and we look to carry that momentum through to this week. Every game the Colts play, the group gets a better understanding of how to prepare for Senior football and how to play within the structures and game style created by coaches Ben Jaenke-Cain and Drew Mitchell.

Despite the win, Sherwood have made a few changes to the side with the inclusion of former Sherwood junior player John Baker (back from Division 1 Senior Football with Springwood) and Lachie Ford of Wests Juniors who has returned to his home state. In addition, regular big man down back Will Hunt has returned to the side. Lawson Campbell goes out due to unavailability and the unlucky players are Cooper Crowell and Lachlan Harvey. The competition for spots is really starting to heat up in the 2nd half of the year, which is great for the team as they strive to improve.

Should be a massive game, and the coaching staff think the lads are ready for a big game. the coaching staff have expressed the pleasure of coaching such a committed group, willing to learn about what it takes to progress to Senior Football.

Coopers - Friday Night Footy Preview

The Woodsmen travel north to take on their friendly rivals the Zillmere Eagles tonight in what looks like it could be a wet weather slog!

Both teams field several players on the wrong side of 30, but there is also plenty of talent getting around and no shortage of footy nous. The Eagles have managed to win several of the most recent games between these two teams in the last few years by less than 5 points on each occasion, though the Woodies did manage to win both encounters in 2019, once by 47 points at home and then narrowly by less than a kick at Zillmere.

The Woodies suffered a shock loss against Bribie Island last Friday and will be licking their wounds and hoping to put up a better performance. The nature of Friday night footy is that every game is a danger game and the Woodies have had to ring in several forced and unforced changes.

Into the side come Val Pope from a hamstring injury, Matt Garland from general soreness and also the legendary Woodies figure, Tim Green for his first game of 2020. Another key inclusion is the ‘Minister of Defence’ himself, David Jackson who will play alongside son Tristan Jackson. Another strong inclusion is Alex Dickfos back from a few years in London. Alex is a senior Premiership player who was a strong spearhead for the QAFL side, having kicked over 200 goals from 89 senior games and will provide a strong focal point in attack.

A win for the Woodies just about guarantees a finals berth, and they will be switched on after last weeks disappointing loss.

Storage King - Senior Women close out huge day of footy in top of table clash

Following a hard fought 1-point win over Morningside, Sherwood Women are all set to host Jimboomba Redbacks in a top of the ladder fixture at McCarthy Homes Oval on Saturday evening.

We are bolstered by some key inclusions this week including Captain Sammy Chisholm, and dominant round 1 performer Jaidyn Eastaughffe who adds much needed height and physicality to our structure.

Laura Archer is also back into the mix this week after training strongly.

Making their debut this week are Lahnie Cooper, Renee King and Tanya Bougoure.

Lahnie Cooper has been an influential member of the team since being headhunted from AFL9’s over the summer and has overcome injury to make her first appearance in the black and white. Lahnie will look to give us a strong target up forward and will add plenty of leadership and composure to the group.

Renee King has trained the house down since coming to the club after not playing football for a few years and put in an impressive midfield performance last week on permit for Moorooka which forced her way into the side this week.

Tanya Bougoure initially came down to the club as a parent happy to watch and support however training with daughter Lily (now Yeronga QAFLW) and son Billy (Sherwood U16’s/Colts) convinced the former national touch football representative that she should give Australian Football a try (and we are very glad that she did give it a go!).

With 28 players not going into 22 spots we also have a host of players on permit this weekend across both Jindalee and Moorooka so we encourage any members who are on the Northside or Sunshine Coast to get out and support our girls as they take on Kedron and Nambour respectively.

PLACE PREVIEW - SHERWOOD BOLSTERED BY RETURNING SPEEDSTERS

Sherwood welcome back two of its speedsters for their crucial QAFL Round 4 match at home  at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer against the high flying Broadbeach on Saturday.

The Pies' two wingers in Dan Edwards and Bruce Reville return after missing Rounds 2 and 3, and both will be crucial to their teams chances against a Broadbeach team that reportedly is full of speedsters and is up there with Palm Beach-Currumbin as QAFL Premiership favourites after heavily recruiting from the Southport and Redland NEAFL ranks for the shortened season.

Reville and Edwards, the club's best and fairest runner up last year, provide the link out of defence and their run and carry opens up opportunities for the Magpie forwards. 

Also in comes Riley Easton who is also a vital cog for the Pies with his ability to apply forward pressure and harassment of opposition defenders to create turnovers in the middle of the ground and across half forward. 

Claye Beams has come up after an injury scare and he is an unexpected bonus for Sherwood with his classy use of the ball across half forward.

Out are the injured Brenton Saunders and Alex Mitchell with general soreness and Noah Resuggan has damaged the MCL in his knee unfortunately for the youngster after making his senior debut last week.

In this Covid-19 shortened season , this is the half way round of the season so the win loss column at this stage of the season takes on added  gravitas. The Magpies simply must win and to do that must overcome their slow starts and get early scoreboard pressure and have the opposition playing catch up football for a change. 

Ryan Harwood has been in fine form in midfield as has Will Fletcher and with Samson Ryan getting back to form in ruck the Magpies will be hoping to win the early ball. 

Up forward Liam Dawson leads the QAFL goal kicking averaging 4 goals per game and his strong marking is a feature of his game. Brody Lumber likewise has had a good start to the season so if the conditions are fine as forecast the Magpies forward line looks potent. 

The half back line looks strong with David Lewis, Luca Winton and Erin Wasley-Black lal class players and young Jack Briskey has been slotted to full-back.

Sherwood are at the cross-roads and despite the QAFL opting for a 6 team finals series another loss will put pressure on the Magpies in the final 4 matches of the season.

A good start is vital for Sherwood to mount a challenge to the Cats, who after two impressive victories, will still start favourites in this encounter.

The Sherwood Reserves will be bolstered with several key inclusions for their season defining clash with Broadbeach at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer on Saturday

This round 4 match is the half way mark of the COVID-19 shortened QAFL season and a loss will just about rule out a finals appearance for the Pies.

In comes skipper Ben Jaenke-Cain to the centre after 2 weeks out with work comittments, CHB Zac Collison from concussion, young defender Whitlam Bishop and new player in Riley Dreghorn to CHF. Dreghorn is a Mackay product and is a 190 cm key forward who gives the Pies a tall forward target.

The outs includempressive youngster Connor Bulley due to injury and strong young defender Hamish  Campbell is unavailable.

The inclusions make the Pies look stronger and with Jaenke-Cain’s  leadership, Collison reading of the play across half back and Dreghorn at CHF the Pies will have a boost in their confidence.

Aaron Maricic has shown he has a touch of class, Zane Lovell has been energetic and Trystan Juffs-King has also been a workhorse in ruck and they will be keen to put their stamp on the match.

The Magpies have not been far off the pace in their 3 losses in 2020 but have been slow to start in all matches.A good start is imperative if Sherwood are to notch their first 4 points of the season.

After a well fought game last week against Morningside Sherwood Colts now have a 1-2 record. Broadbeach have had 2 victories and a bye but at this stage of the season it is still too early to know the pecking order of the competition, especially with players coming and going from Senior & Reserves Football, and next week the academy interruptions commence!

 n such a short season todays match becomes a must win game if we are going to make finals. The Colts are looking forward to having a dry track and this should help our preferred ball movement. We have a few changes and welcome Jonty Macdougall into the side for the first time this season. We are hoping his speed and natural football ability will lead to a number of score involvements going forward.

The coaches have put pressure on the group to come together and ensure they bring energy and effort for all four quarters.

We are a looking to seeing Zane Barrett build on his great game from last week and the rest of the forwards to staying more connected and being more damaging as we go forward.

We feel our mids are starting to work well together and have better understanding of their individual roles. We are excited to see Tom Kearney continue his fine form and looking for massive games from Sean Ryan  and Josh Lane. 

Our backs keep building and we are looking to be more daring and attacking this week. This will be led by Lawson Campbell and Will Radcliffe  driving our backs to be more creative coming out of our defensive 50. Our backs continue to be led by great defensive play from Brodie Gardner , Tom Evans and  and Oscar Murphy and this will play a massive role to ensure we come away with the victory.

the top of the table Woodsmen take on unknown quantity, the Bribie Island Bulldogs tonight at McCarthy Homes Oval.

Bribie Island were the Premiership winners in 2019 in the lower division and earnt promotion this year into the higher rated Friday night competition. It’s been nearly 10 years since these sides clashed, with the Woodies having fond memories of sensational Bribie Island Bus Trips in years gone by!

Once again, as is the nature of Woodies footy, there are 5+ changes to the side this week, headlined by the loss of club legend Jimmy Rozynski who sadly ruptured his ACL last week in the superb win over Jimboomba. Also out with a hamstring strain is the pontiff Val Pope, who turned back the clock last week with a vintage best on ground display and Luke Scott and Gabe McKinnon miss due to other commitments. However, on the positive ledger the Woodies are able to bring in former QAFL Senior Captains in Lachlan Woods and Gerard Moore, and multiple best & fairest winner Sam Curtis among some strong inclusions. Also in for his first game is Nick Barling, who is a very strong addition to the Woodsmen stocks.

It promises to be a fast paced battle as the Woodies are starting to hit their straps and adjsut to the pace of the younger brigade led by Colts Premiership players Abdullah Haddad and Sammy Minin, who was best on ground in the QAFL Colts 2018 Grand final Triumph.

With 2 x QAFL calibre ruckmen in Gerard Moore and Nick Barling feeding a strong midfield led by Gareth Crawford, the Woodies will be looking to lock the ball in their forward half and create scoring pressure with their speed at ground level and strong half back line lead by boom recruit Chris Brown.

WOMEN KEEN TO KEEP MOMENTUM GOING

After getting off the mark with a healthy win over Mount Gravatt in Round 1, Sherwood were able to carry plenty of confidence into the bye. It wasn’t all respite over the weekend with Eleisha Robinson, Andrea Carlaw and Jess Carlsen swapping black for red to play on permit with Moorooka in the QFAW North League. It was also great to see the women supporting other Magpies teams over the weekend from the QAFL down at Palm Beach to the Woodsmen at Yeronga, the one club approach being a key pillar of the culture at Sherwood.

This week we take on cross town rivals Morningside at Jack Esplen Oval in what shapes to be a challenging contest against an experienced opponent. Our focus this week has centred on gradual improvement in key areas that will make us perform better as a team. With 22 players making their debut for the club in round 1, we have been doing plenty of one-on one work building skill fundamentals, improving game sense and communication.

As will be the case most weeks, we have a few changes through injury and availability and have an excellent opportunity to test the depth of our squad.

Headlining the outs are Captain, Sam Chisholm (ankle) and Jaidyn Eastaughffe (unavailable).

Keep an eye out for Jess “Sharky” Stallard who will make her debut on Saturday following in the footsteps of older brother, Mitch Stallard (Sherwood QAFL / Redlands NEAFL). Balancing State Netball and Sherwood commitments, Jess has been training with the group since Pre-Christmas and will look to utilise the iconic Stallard family drop punt to break the lines and hit the scoreboard.  

Into the team also comes utility, Courtney Markey making her debut in her first year of Australian rules since making the move across from Rugby 7’s. Originally from Inglewood, Courtney continues the long running tradition of athletes from the Darling Downs making Sherwood their home club. Courtney has been working hard on her skills under the tutelage of former Brisbane Lion, Justin Clarke (the development coach at Sherwood),  and looks ready to make an impact for the team.

PLACE PREVIEW - SHERWOOD LOOKING FOR GOOD START IN WET CONDITIONS

The Sherwood match committee have made three changes to their team for their big clash with the undefeated Morningside in QAFL Round 3 action at Morningside on Saturday, with 2 of them forced.

Making his debut will be Colts 2018 Premiership Captain Noah Resuggan after a fantastic pre-season, excellent reserves form and of course three seasons leading the Colts to 2 Grand Finals and a Prelim Final. Another youngster in Jack Briskey, who has one Senior game under his belt from last year has also been included and is an exciting talent a year on.. Also back in is swingman Jack Goodall after missing last week with a nagging injury.

Out are the injured Riley Greene, Riley Easton with work commitments and Aaron Maricic drops back to Reserves after a late call-up last week when Dan Edwards  was a late withdrawal due to injury.

Coach Anthony McDonald no doubt has stressed the need for a good start and to be switched on from the fist bounce after giving Palm Beach-Currumbin a 50 point head start last week before almost hauling them in. The operative word here is "almost" and all too often in the past the Pies have been guilty of playing "catch-up football"

However, this is a new team with a new coach and is a side loaded with plenty of talent  including 3 ex-AFL players, SANFL Premiership star and several Queensland representatives so the Pies have an exceptional side to put together a great season.

It is hard to get a handle on their Panthers opponents, who disposed of Labrador and Wilston-Grange with late bursts and with several players added to their list after the season commenced, getting a handle on their form can be difficult.

Liam Dawson has been on fire with 9 goals in his first two matches and while wet weather is forecast he and Brodie Lumber still have the forward presence and footy smarts to create havoc for the Panther defenders. Claye Beams has shown his class across half forward and poses another threat while Ryan Harwood is another in good early season form. Aaron Highlands has been in fine form in both the ruck and in defence. Riding shotgun will be skipper David Lewis, reigning  Bill Peirce medallist Luca Winton and Will Fletcher moves to half back after two strong games in the midfield, so the Magpies will also add plenty of run and carry to their stout defence

The Pies will miss Riley Easton, who applies forward pressure and in wet conditions would have been handy up forward and on the ball with his grunt work. Caleb Franks on ball has been excellent in tight for the Pies and will need to take over some of Easton’s role and Cade Scott has been terrific at the contest would have been a Rising Star weekly winner in either of his two games if the QAFL were  naming Rising Star in 2020.

With Edwards missing from one wing and Reville the other, the Magpies have taken from both defence and attack to replace them with the ultra consistent and reliable Ethan Sivijs getting a chance up the ground, while Billy Johnson moves from the forward pocket.

Wet conditions will make for a tough hard slog and the team that takes its chances will emerge the victor. Sherwood will be looking to bounce out of the blocks and an early lead will be priceless in the conditions.

Sherwood Reserves will be looking to bounce back and get a win on the board after two tough losses in the opening two rounds. The Pies were in both early season matches for  three quarters of the games but faded late in both to give up the 4 points.

Coach Cory Hopkins will be asking his players for a four quarter effort but as is the way of Reserves football, he has had to make 6 changes to the team, 5  of which were forced. 

In comes the Smith brothers, Rohan and Daniel after early season injuries, Aaron Maricic back from Seniors, exciting youngster Connor Bulley comes up from the Colts and Lachie Pearson and Aiden d'Roza are promoted from the Woodsmen.

Out go Noah Resuggan and Jack Briskey to the Seniors, Zac Collison and Harry Marshall are injured, Whitlam Bishop is unavailable and Josh Lane returns to the Colts after stepping up last week as a late inclusion after playing a full game in the Colts in an impressive showing.

The Reserves are a young team with a smattering of experience and like their Senior counterparts will want a good start to put scoreboard pressure on their Morningside opponents. The Magpies will need to be at their best if they are to get the four points and with wet weather forecast it will be the team which is hard at the contest and uses footy smarts that will prevail.

COLTS KEEN TO BOUNCE BACK

Sherwood Colts will be looking to have a big bounce-back match against Morningside this week. It was a great week on track with all the boys looking to rise to the challenge and continuing to work on structures and ball movement.

This week the Colts are looking to bring more physicality around the ball to ensure we are winning the ball at the contest and generating our own ball movement. Coaching staff are excited to see how we bounce back and continue our development as a team.

We welcome Zane Barrett into the side for the first time this year. He has been putting the extras in at training and has been unlucky not to get a run earlier. We have a couple of players under some injury clouds, but we will have a strong 22 on the park as we bring back Mitch Lake after being injured last week and move Charlie Thorpe onto the wing. Both these players are talented and we are hoping they impacted the game on the inside and give us spread through the middle of the ground.

 Our forward line will miss Connor Bulley, who has been promoted to the Reserves  so but we will look to push Cooper Crowell up the ground and play Lamont Kalolo deeper this week. Abu Kante and Andrae Mackay will be asked to provide ground pressure to lock the ball in.

Our mids have a massive job to shutdown Morningside’s ability to feed back and ensure we are getting first use. We are excited to see this group grow and see some great outside spread from Morgan Smith, Xavier Knight and Sean Ryan. At the same time, we have Mitchell Lake  and Tom Kearney win that ball for us and get it to our good ball users like Josh Lane and Brodie Gardner. Our backs will look to continue their strong start to the season with Oscar Murphy coming back in should provide the directional voice we lacked last week. We are hoping to continue to have Tom Evans and Will Hunt having massive impacts by intercepting marks across our halfback and looking to use Lawson Campbell and Rory Edwards run and carry coming out of our back half.

Coopers Friday Night Footy Preview

The Woodies head down the Mt Lindsay Highway to arguably the coldest ground in South East Queensland when they take on the top of the table Jimboomba Redbacks tonight.

Both clubs sit 2-0 at the head of the ladder, but Jimboomba hold the % advantage after some crushing wins.

It’s a long rivalry for the two sides, having played off in 2 grand finals for a victory each a decade ago, but there have been plenty of significant battles since.

The Woodies will go into the game missing several key players and at time of writing have been unable to finalise their final 22, however in true Woodsmen style they will show up expecting to win regardless of the numbers or names missing!

The likes of Rozynski, Crawford, Davis and Mihalopoulos will still take the field, while the evergreen Gabe Mckinnon also pulls on the boots for the first time in 2020.

It promises to be a tough affair, and while the Woodies would welcome your support - realistically we know nobody is driving 45 mins to stand in the rain to watch the 3rds, but the lads know you’ll be thinking of them!

PLACE PREVIEW - EARLY SEASON TEST FOR SHERWOOD

Sherwood will get an early season test of their premiership credentials when the Magpies travel down the M1 to Salk Oval to take on bitter rivals Palm Beach-Currumbin in Round 2 QAFL action on Saturday.

There is no love lost between the old Pineapple Hotel Cup rivals who played some memorable finals matches and Grand Finals, with the Pies having a 2-1 Grand Final advantage from those years, and no doubt for the modern Magpie, the Lions are the arch rivals.

PBC have been the strongest club for the past 5 years in the QAFL and after they easily defeated last year's Premiers in Surfers Paradise last week will provide the Pies with a good guide where they sit in the QAFL pecking order.

The Sherwood selectors have made three changes to the side which made a powerful statement with a seven goal victory last weekend. In comes Samson Ryan to the ruck to replace Trystan Juffs-King, while Jayden Gallagher and Jack Austin are promoted from Reserves to cover for the injured Jack Goodall and unavailable Bruce Reville.

The Pies still look strong despite the outs and they look even all over the ground, but have a forward line that is capable of ripping any defence apart. Brodie Lumber and Liam Dawson marked strongly last week and with Claye Beams and Ryan Harwood have two potent ground level players.

Samson Ryan in ruck will allow Aaron Highlands to cover the loss of Jack Goodall at CHB.

Captain David Lewis goes to a wing and Luca Winton, Riley Greene and Erin Wasley-Black form the nucleus of a strong backline This match will give a good formline to who the team to beat is in the race for the QAFL flag in this shortened QAFL season. It shapes as a gripping and high class contest.
