MACK TRUCKS MATCH PREVIEW - MAGPIES BUILD TOWARDS FINALS

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies are building toward finals as they travel to meet another old rival in Mt Gravatt on Saturday at Dittmer Park.

On paper the Pies will be warm favourites, but will be wary of a resurgent Vultures team keen to take down a scalp or two before season's end.

The Magpies had a huge win in their first clash this year but the home team are stronger this time around and will want to make a statement. The Magpies have withstood all challenges bar three this year and have made three changes to the side that won well against PBC last week.

In comes Val Pope after missing with illness, CHF Tom Michael returns from Redland and young speedster Jake Heard gets his chance after 2 years of injury frustration and recent good Reserves form.

Out of the side are Brodie Easton and Matt Garland, both squeezed to the Reserves after stepping up in recent matches and the unavailable Tim McEvoy.

The changes have resulted in a strong looking forward line with Tom Michael at CHF, Sam Copland to a flank and the classy Val Pope back in to provide another forward option. With Alex Dickfos now at permanent full forward it is a potent attacking unit. Dickfos is averaging 4 goals a match in recent weeks and has kicked 45 goals to be on fourth the goal kicking list, 11 goals behind leader Kent Abey.

Speedsters Riley Easton and Jake Heard will both be injected into the forward line to hurry and harass and add another level of excitement to the Pies forward line.

The back line has been miserly in all but 2 matches this season and Glenn Humphrey and his selectors have moved Doug Lawrence to fullback to counter the Vultures key forward. Chris Hunt goes to CHB and Sean Mewing and Luke Scott flank him in a solid and rebounding half back line.

Hayden Thick will start in ruck to give him more game time after missing recent matches and this will allow the hard working Dom Beer to reduce his workload.

Callum Carseldine, the QAFL's Syd Guildford Award nominee for Round 15, just continues to rack up "hard ball gets" and he is part of a strong engine room with Drew Mitchell and Richard Wenham, both also Syd Guildford nominees this season.

The Pies centreline of Brad Allen, Ben Jaenke-Cain and Aaron Maricic provide a variety of styles and sizes and all can inject themselves decisively into the play to drive their team forward.

The Magpies will be set for an early onslaught from Mt Gravatt but look to have the class all over the ground to withstand this and then take control of the contest to enable them to take the 4 points and consolidate second spot on the ladder.

PLACE PREVIEW - Reserves Round 16 vs Mt Gravatt

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies Reserves will field their strongest team for the season against Mt Gravatt on Saturday.

There are 9 changes to the side that defeated Palm Beach-Currumbin last week.

In come key forwards Matt Garland (Returning from Seniors) and Matt Hockley (work commitments), half forwards Joel Workman, Luke de Nys and Jadan Morton, all from injury, wingers Brodie Easton (Seniors) and Sunny Aneet returns after missing a week with small forward Jak Williams back from playing for the Lions Reserves last week.

Jake Heard has been promoted to the Seniors and a number of Woodsmen who helped out last week return to their side to prepare for finals action next weekend.

Gabe McKinnon across half back is having a fine season and recently celebrated 200 club games, in addition to his long junior service.

Bryce Crossley has had a consistent year in midfield and Redlands listed ruckman/forward Liam Dwyer has enjoyed his return to football to be a fine player in recent matches.

Young ruckman Monty Vine has toiled hard all year and other youngsters in Logan Murray and Matt Mazarolle will be in the Senior mix next season.

With winnable matches in the last two rounds, the Pies are a big chance to knock off the finals-bound Vultures to help finish the season with three wins and end on a high note.

METIS WEALTH MILESTONE - Gabe Mckinnon 200 Games

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies celebrated the loyalty and contribution of Gabe McKinnon last Saturday when he played his 200th game of Senior Football for the Western Magpies (in addition to countless junior games!)

His fine contribution to the club was was acknowledged last week by club historian and "keeper of the flame" Kevin Kluver after the match against Palm Beach-Currumbin.

Gabe "Heinzy" McKinnon has played 81 Senior and 119 Reserves games. He played in the 2006 Seniors Premiership when the Pies defeated Noosa at Carrara and played in two Reserves premierships in 2005 and 2007.

He was awarded best on ground in the 2005 Reserves Premiership playing at centre half back.

He grew up in Brisbane but his family was from Adelaide so Australian Rules was always his preferred choice of footy. He started at Yeronga but after 2 years moved to Sherwood in 1995 to play Under 12s and has not missed a season since.

His junior career was not as successful premiership-wise as his senior career as he played in four losing grand finals and in a tied grand final while at Sherwood and also lost an Under 18 Grand final for the Western Magpies in 2003.

He also laments the one that got away as the Pies lost the 2008 Reserves Grand Final after entering the decider undefeated throughout the season.

He was runner-up in the Reserves best and fairest in 2005 and has a been consistent performer in every season he has played for the Pies.

"Heinzy's" jinking runs make for entertaining football and at times have mesmerised himself, his teammates and opponents alike with his unpredictability. His flamboyance and "will I kick it or handball it or take on the entire opposition with long bouncing runs" has left a few of his coaches a little less hirsute . Speaking of coaches, a few he has played under include Des Lashman, Kevin Stephens, Alan Hagley, Andrew Farr, Paul Grentell, Peter McClennan, Craig Allen and current coaches Glenn Humphrey and Quentin Johnson.

This season he has been in best and fairest winning form in the Reserves, playing across half back and his intercept marking and run out of defence have been highlights of the Pies' season. That he has still been amongst the best players whether the Pies have had weak and strong teams this year, which is testament to his consistency this season.

He has been at the club for 20 years and has been a loyal and uncomplaining player. He is the epitome of Rudyard Kipling's hero in his poem  "If", taking the good with the bad with equal measure, never complaining and happy to play where he is picked and trying his hardest every match.

Heinzy has a ready smile and is just a good bloke to have around the club.

He is scrupulously fair in his football and is fearless in his attack on the ball.

And his nickname? As Gabe tells it, he had curly red hair when younger and Tim McEvoy gave him the nickname Heinzy-- Heinz tomato sauce was dubbed "Big Red" at the time.

He says he has had a lot of fun times at the club and has made many life long friendships.

He has also done well off the field and works as a solicitor for a law firm in the city.

Congratulations to Gabe on reaching a substantial footballing milestone and being one of the blokes that makes this football club a great place to be.

Magpies on Media Street - Round 15 Syd Guilford Nominee

Andrew Thomson

The latest Magpie to take a stroll down media street is fearless Co-Captain, Callum Carseldine

From AFLQ

The Western Magpies were as comprehensive as they have been all year in their win over Palm Beach on Saturday, and they were led from the front superbly by skipper Callum Carseldine, the round 15 Syd Guildford nominee.

Like in a few other games this year, Carseldine had his own footy on Saturday, but his best on ground performance wasn’t handed to him on a platter; he really had to work for this one.

“I copped a tag in the first half. I’m not used to being tagged so it was a new experience, but fortunately I thought the likes of Drew Mitchell and the other mids were getting dangerous, so we were getting the job done without me being too influential early,” Carseldine said.

“I guess I worked my way into it through the contested footy rather than free footy.”

After missing last year due to an ACL tear, managing his load this year was always going to be a tricky one.

If you include the State Representative Carnival, it’s been 12 weeks without a break, but resting the knee may not be the best option.

“It’s a unique thing because you think you need rest, but what the knee actually needs is for you to strengthen the quad and hamstrings. The more you rest the worse it gets,” he said.

He believes his ability to consistently be out on the park this year has been helped by one man in particular.

“James Nightingale, has been huge for us in terms of being quite structured and deliberate in how we recover, I feel really good going into the last part of the year,” Carseldine said.

While Carseldine has been a star this year, the Magpies biggest strength in 2015 has been their ability to spread the load.
The have adopted the affectionate title of ‘a bunch of role players’ both internally, and externally.

“There is always banter in the sheds in terms of who is the best, Matt Davis rates himself pretty high,” he joked.

“The best thing about this year, it seems like there is different guys each week standing out. Early on in the year when Luke Scott went down with his ankle, we thought we would really struggle to be a potent team.

“We have learned not to rely on the individual, we have learned to rely on our disciplines and our processes, but we are very understanding of the fact that Labrador are still the bench mark and for us to beat them, we are all going to have to play our best.”

When we spoke earlier in the year, Carseldine’s goals were a top four finish. Even though that has been well and truly eclipsed, there are still some areas that need to be addressed.

“We haven’t got as close to Labrador as we would like, but we have certainly gone better and stayed at a higher level for longer than I would have thought of, and that’s largely because of Hump and the coaching staff,” he said.

With finals just three weeks away, I asked Carseldine if he could dare to dream just yet.

“I think it’s healthy to dream. July and August are tough months. Rocking up to training you are still enthusiastic, but I think it’s healthy to think about the possibilities of winning a grand final, provided you don’t go away from the things that have got you to this point,” he said.

“That’s the best thing about the Magpies. I’ve never sensed there are egos or people who think they are better than what they are. It’s good to think a little bit about what we could achieve, that creates motivation and energy amongst the group, but we are definitely not looking past Mt Gravatt this weekend.

“They are always a really hard and physical side, and their last month has been excellent, so there is no chance we are going to take the last three weeks lightly.”

The Magpies are in the position they are in 2015 for two reasons, the cattle, and the leadership. Carseldine is at the front of them both.

MACK TRUCK MATCH REVIEW - MAGPIES DOMINATE OLD RIVALS

Andrew Thomson

A dominant opening 20 minutes by the Western Magpies which had the Pies with a 40 point lead blew old rivals Palm Beach-Currumbin away as the home team then went on to a 12 goal victory over the fifth placed Lions.

It was a comprehensive victory against what could have been a dangerous opponent as the Pies won 19.10 - 124 to 7.10 - 52. The win moves the Pies to second on the ladder a game clear of Morningside and Wilston Grange

Coach Glenn Humphrey thought it was the best first half the Magpies had played this year with a half time lead of 62 points over a fellow finals contender.

The Magpies have been lauded this year for their work in close and for the contested ball but not so much for their running game. The Pies won the contested footy but then opened up play early and were more direct in forward entries so key forwards Alex Dickfos, Sam Copland and Matt Garland were able to exploit the quick entries to all hit the scoreboard with early goals.

The Pies rested on their laurels somewhat in the second half but PBC did lift their work rate to make the second half more of a contest.

Callum Carseldine continued his good form, winning the ball and feeding it to his runners and Richard Wenham was another racking up plenty of disposals.

Doug Lawrence and Luke Scott were pillars in defence yet again and the backline were successful in restricting the opposition to a total below 10 goals once again. The Pies have only had 10 or more goals kicked against them on four occasions this year and have the second lowest points against after ladder leaders Labrador.

Up forward Dickfos and Copland were a handful for the Lions defenders with their leading and marking and a pleasing aspect of the Pies game was the space they created for their leading forwards.

Brady Allen was also constructive from a wing and his form has been pleasingly consistent this year.

The Pies travel to Mt Gravatt next Saturday for another danger game. The Vultures have found good form recently and will not be the pushover the first round 134 point win to the Pies might suggest.

Glenn Humphrey – Senior Coach

"We were very happy with the outcome, particularly the first half - we broke them right open and ran the legs off them

We won the stoppages, got first use of the footy and were able to share it really well.  I wasn't overly happy with our second half, but the job was already done by then.

Their (PBC's) attack on the footy and their work rate was a lot better in the third quarter, but we continued on with what we were doing, but weren't as clean as we were in the first half"

METIS WEALTH Match Review - Reserves Round 15 vs Palm Beach

Andrew Thomson

RESERVES IN STRONG WIN

The Western Magpies Reserves had a strong win over Palm Beach-Currumbin, winning by 47 points, 14.14 - 98 to 7.9 - 51.

The Pies were without several regular players due to injury but were bolstered by the inclusion of several experienced players, including 3 players backing up from the Woodsmen on Friday night. The Pies held their own early, but in a dominant second quarter were able to take a strong half time lead and then take control in the second half to win comfortably.

Young speedster Jake Heard used his pace and deadly left foot to drive the Pies forward and young Redland listed ruckman Liam Dwyer continues to play well in his third game back from injury and capped a good day with 3 goals.

Matt Mazarolle has had a consistent year and just gets better each week, Gabe McKinnon across half back was again a fine player and must be well in the reckoning for Best and Fairest. Ben Hooper had another good game on half back and the wing and midfielder Bryce Crossley keeps motoring along to win plenty of the ball.

The Pies welcomed new Dad Chris Mihalopoulos to help out and he celebrated with 4 goals and Jim Power returned for a cameo to boot 2 goals.

METIS WEALTH MATCH PREVIEW - Reserves vs Palm Beach Round 15

Andrew Thomson

RESERVES DEPTH TO BE TESTED

The Western Magpies Reserves will have their depth tested when they play Palm Beach-Currumbin at Chelmer on Saturday.

The team will be missing Luke de Nys and Joel Workman, both rested after several head knocks recently, Jadan Morton with a slight hamstring strain and Jamie Page with illness.

Matt Hockley is unavailable due to work commitments. The two changes in the Seniors did not result in any players dropping back, however the side will welcome back half back Nathan Morrow.

The team will look to consistent performers in the experienced Gabe McKinnon and Sean McEvoy in defence, Bryce Crossley and Hunter Heath in midfield and well performed youngsters in Ben Hooper, Logan Murray and  Matt Mazarollle also around ground.

Up forward speedsters Jake Heard and Jak Williams will need to be busy in the absence of a tall marking forward.

After looking the goods with a full list several weeks ago the Pies have struggled recently with injuries and unavailability affecting the strength of the team. The Pies need to compete strongly to finish the year on a good note and against the Lions who are also on the lower half of the ladder, still have a good chance to take the four points.

They will want to do well in front of the 2005 Reserves Premiership reunion crowd.

PLACE PREVIEW - MAGPIES TO HOST OLD RIVALS

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies will have the chance to move into second place on the ladder if they overcome old rivals and fifth placed Palm Beach-Currumbin at Chelmer on Saturday.

With 2nd placed Morningside taking on ladder leaders Labrador, there is a chance a Pies win could push Morningside to third should results follow current ladder positions, however strong focus will be on the task at hand against a quality Palm Beach outfit.

The Magpies regain ruckman Hayden Thick from illness, winger Aaron Maricic from Brisbane Lions duties but lose in form half back Matt Davis with an ankle injury and Sunny Aneet has been omitted from the side for not meeting team expectations.

Maricic will be a straight swap for Aneet, while Thick will give Dom Beer a much needed chop out in the ruck after Beer has carried the load for 3 weeks with support from Alex Dickfos.

Alex Dickfos can now shift back to full-forward in a more permanent role, with some possible ruck work in the forward 50. However, kicking goals will again be his major task and his leading, marking and accuracy in front of goal has been good in recent matches.

Luke Scott has been excellent in recent weeks but lifted even more when Davis was injured early last week. Scott's reading of the play and intercept marking would be close to the best in the League and he should feature prominently in the QAFL Grogan Medal calculations this year.

Drew Mitchell in midfield has been in rare form with numerous centre clearances capped by crucial goals in most matches and with Davis, Scott and Doug Lawrence will be among the Magpies' William Pierce Medal favourites in 2015.

Lawrence has lead a resolute defence with Chris Hunt mopping up brilliantly and playing consistent football each week and he is rarely beaten one-on-one.

Luke Mitchell has been another consistent performer in defence and Sean Mewing is back to his rebounding best. With Davis out, Brady Allen will slot into the back flank and Jae Humphrey will move to the wing.

Up forward Val Pope will spend more time deep and Lachlan Woods will go to half forward and Matt Garland will start in the pocket. Young Sam Copland has a big task at CHF for a 16 year old but he has been up to the task in recent matches.

In midfield Callum Carseldine and Ben Jaenke-Cain have been consistent all year and with Tim McEvoy, have won plenty of the contested football to drive the Pies forward. Young Riley Easton will be given some time in midfield this match and his speed and tackling pressure wins plenty of the ball.

The Magpies will be keen to perform in front of the 2005 Reserves premiership reunion crowd and also grab second place on the ladder. Palm Beach-Currumbin have been long-time rivals of the Magpies and the home team will be want to make it two wins in 2015 against the Lions.

Coached by Andrew Farr, the Pies Reserves won resoundingly over Springwood at Coorparoo, 11.9 - 75 to  5.13 - 43.

A gale was blowing throughout the match and reports indicate that it was almost impossible to kick against the wind, and in fact some kicks were blown backwards.

Captained by Luke Knight, rover Mitch Berding was named Best on Ground, just pipping CHB Gabe McKinnon.

Players in the Premiership were:

Brett McEvoy (hamstring) and Leigh Rudd (broken leg) both missed out and Ryan Shaw and Chris Keane were left out of the selected side.

MACK TRUCK REVIEW - DOMINANT 3RD QUARTER SETS UP VICTORY

Andrew Thomson

A seven goal third quarter set up a relatively comfortable victory for the Western Magpies over Surfers Paradise by 49 points, 16.14  -110 to 9.7 - 61.

Played in deceptively blustery conditions at Surfers Paradise which favoured the change room end, both side were guilty of poor disposal and inaccurate goalkicking early in the match.

The Pies led by 17 points at half time after a tight first half with plenty of congested and contested football.

In the third quarter the Magpies opened up the play and with their run and carry took control and dominated the quarter with seven goals to the Demons two.

The final quarter was played out with a minimum of fuss, although the Demons booted three quick goals early in the quarter after the Pies sat back a bit. The Pies were sparked into action again and were able to finish the quarter stronger to be comfortable victors.

Midfielders Drew Mitchell and Val Pope were again ball magnets. Pope sparked the Pies early and new dad Mitchell was in everything in the engine room as well as kicking two goals, continuing his habit of hitting the scoreboard, much to his coach's delight.

Dom Beer had his hands full in ruck early against a Surfers Paradise pair who were mobile but he stuck to the task and with support from Alex Dickfos gradually got on top which was the catalyst for the Pies dominant third quarter.

Dickfos' ruck work is improving each week and he capped a good game with 4 goals.

Luke Scott and Sean Mewing lifted after the early ankle injury to Matt Davis and both read the play well to take numerous intercept marks. Callum Carseldine was again in and under all day to win plenty of hard ball for the Pies and youngster Riley Easton was again busy up forward.

The Pies remain a game clear in third place on the ladder and sit second on percentage and host old rival Palm Beach Currumbin at Chelmer next Saturday.

Davis will miss but the Pies should regain ruckman Hayden Thick after illness and winger Aaron Maricic, who turned out for the Lions Reserves in the NEAFL on the weekend.

Coach’s thoughts:

Glenn Humphrey – Western Magpies

“It was a bit of a scrappy game early but after half time we got away. We pretty much had control, but we couldn’t get the scoreboard pressure that we wanted, hence they stayed in the game until half time.

“We converted well in third quarter which blew them out of the game.

“We won the ball, controlled the football, but just kicked a number of points in the second quarter that were all getable. To their credit they stuck at it and we snuck away bit by bit.”

Peter Young – Surfers Paradise

“They are a good side, their set up and structures around the stoppages are really good, I love the way they go about it.”

“Hopefully our young group can take something out of that.

“They stuck at it today, we were good in the midfield but they controlled that much of the footy we didn’t get a chance to run.”

“We just need to take the game on a bit more, and not worry about turning it over.

Mack Truck Match Review - Reserves vs Surfers Paradise

Andrew Thomson

RESERVES BLOW FINALS CHANCE

The Western Magpies Reserves wasted several opportunities to get over the line against Surfers Paradise on Saturday, but to no avail.  the 8.13 - 61 to 6.5 - 41 loss sees the faint finals hopes now out of reach for this improving group.

The Pies suffered from basic skill errors and poor decision making with the footy, which likely links to a lack of fitness and irregular training habits for many players.  Unsurprisingly, the players who attend training with regularity are again among the better performed players on the day.

The Pies were also not helped by the loss of Luke De Nys and Joel Workman for long periods, due to injuries early in the match.

Despite dominating possession in the second half, poor disposal ad decision making resulting in frequently missed targets was the undoing of good contested efforts.

Coach Quentin Johnson was disappointed with the result, as it was another loss in a match the Pies showed enough ability to win and could have done so.  This is now the fourth occasion this young side has been in a winning position, but unable to close out victory.

Best players were Redland listed ruck/forward Liam Dwyer, midfielders Bryce Crossley, Matt Mazarolle and Logan Murray and Redland listed Jak Williams.  Key defender, Sean McEvoy also continued his season long rich vein of form in another quality display.  Young U/17 forward Farrell also showed plenty of promise, showing he could be a key player for the Pies in the future.

The Magpies will now turn their attention to Palm Beach next week and will be looking for some positives from a dissapointing season.  the improvement of young players in Logan Murray, Matt Mazarolle, Grant Jennnings, Nathan Morrow, Alex Spasovski, Monty Vine, Brayden Thomas and Lachlan Gaedtke has been excellent, and hopefully they are all lining up for the Pies again in 2016.  Luke De Nys and Joel Workman are also two young players with the ability to play more regular senior football, and Jake Heard has shown weekly improvement as his fitness grows after an injury interrupted season.

PLACE PREVIEW - PIES FACE CHALLENGE AT SURFERS PARADISE

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies have made three changes for their challenging clash with Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Into the team come Alex Dickfos returning to full forward and to pinch hit in the ruck, co-captain Lachlan Woods returns from injury and Matt Garland comes in after good Reserves form following long term injury. Expected inclusions, ruckman Hayden Thick was not selected due to illness and Aaron Maricic is still on Queensland Under 18 duties. The match is challenging as the Demons are a dangerous proposition on their home ground, which is often windy and has caused the Pies plenty of problems over the years.

Out of the team are Matt Hockley (work commitments), Tom Michael (recalled to Redlands) and Joel Workman returns to the Reserves.

Workman suffered a head knock last week and wasn't his usual busy self during the match. Matt Garland gets his chance as he has done all the hard yards in rehab to get his knee right and then has shown consistent form at Reserves level.

The Magpies got out of jail last time the two sides met as they had to come from behind to win at home. However this was a win that gave the Magpies increased self belief they can win after a poor start. Coach Glenn Humphrey won't want a repeat of that game and will stress to his team to be on guard from the first bounce and get on top early to snuff out any Demon thoughts of an upset.

The Pies defensive six are unchanged and again have been the catalyst for the Magpies victories. Miserly in defence,  they have also been an attacking weapon. Matt Davis and Luke Scott have been strong in the air, Doug Lawrence has been superb on the opposition key forwards all season and the run of Chris Hunt, Sean Mewing and Luke Mitchell has not only shut down opponents but opened up scoring opportunities.

Up forward Sam Copland goes to CHF, Val Pope and Matt Thompson to half forward and Dickfos at FF will straighten the attack up. Dickfos will go into ruck at times to give Dom Beer a break and Garland will slot into the key forward role.

16 year old Riley Easton provides the small forward hustle and bustle and Lachlan Woods will start in the pocket.

In midfield Sunny Aneet gets plenty of the ball and Drew Mitchell, Callum Carseldine, Tim McEvoy  and Ben Jaenke-Cain provide the grunt work in and under.

Brady Allen can be the x-factor with his ability to play a variety of roles and his long kicking can help the Pies open up play.

The Magpies have worked hard to be 10-3 after 13 rounds and will not want to drop this game.

On paper the Pies will be favoured but will need be on their game to win against a Demon side keen to get a big scalp.

PIES RESERVES STRENGTHENED FOR MUST WIN MATCH

The Western Magpies Reserves have the first of five must-win matches when they play Surfers Paradise on Saturday.  The home team is still in the hunt for fifth place on the ladder and a loss to the Pies will put the finals out of reach, while a Magpie win keeps them in the race for an improbable finals appearance.

Into the side comes Jadan Morton after a week out for a wedding, Jak Williams and Brodie Easton after each having a week off and Joel Workman back from the Seniors. Out is the promoted Matt Garland, who returns to the Seniors after consistent form after his comeback from long term injury.

Morton will provide the tall option up forward and Williams and Workman will also boost the forward line and with livewire Jake Heard will test the Demons defence with their pace. Chris Mihalopoulos helped out last week but won't play this match  and his experience will be missed.

Easton will give a lift to the midfield brigade , which also has Bryce Crossley, Luke de Nys and Ben Hooper in good form. Youngster Matt Mazarolle continues to improve each week and will be on the Senior selectors radar in the near future.

Liam Dwyer in ruck and resting forward will be better for his match last week after an injury layoff and young Monty Vine has been good the past few matches in ruck for the Pies.

Sean McEvoy and Gabe McKinnon lead a sold defensive unit  and the return of youngster Nathan Morrow will also boost the Pies backline.

The Magpies are not quite at full strength but still have the personnel to defeat Surfers and keep their final hopes alive.

MACK TRUCKS MATCH REVIEW - PIES SCRAPE HOME IN THRILLER

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies won a tough tight contest against fellow finals contender Wilston Grange at Stafford on Saturday. The win puts the Pies a game clear in third place and only behind second placed Morningside on percentage.

After trailing for most of the second half the Pies hit the front at the 27 minute mark of the last quarter and hung on for a hectic final 3 minutes to win a low scoring match by 3 points, 7.11 - 53 to 7.8  -50.

Ruckman /forward Tom Michael kicked a long goal after marking 45 metres out on a 30 degree angle to put the Pies in front and break the hearts of a large and vocal home crowd.

The Pies have now won well 2 weeks ago and showed on Saturday they can also win ugly. Both sides lined up with several changes to the teams that met 2 weeks ago, with the Gorillas having several key inclusions and the Pies were without several top players so the chances of a different result were there from the start.

The match never reached great heights and despite almost perfect conditions it was a tough, tight  and scrappyaffair. Both teams possess tough midfield combinations and easy possessions were few and far between as the tackling pressure applied by both teams was fierce. Both teams pushed back hard in defence resulting in crowded forward lines which made goalscoring difficult.

Added to this was the Pies were missing big key forward in Alex Dickfos and did not have the long kick option going forward and when they did bomb it in the Grange defenders were able to clear the ball out of defence with ease.

It would be a long time since the Magpies have not scored in the first quarter and went on to win the match. Grange were favoured by a slight breeze in the opener but were guilty of wasting several opportunities to goal which let the Pies off the hook.

The Magpies then wrested some control but were also wasteful in the second quarter but went in at halftime 4 points up.

Two opportunistic goals from 100 gamer Matt Thompson in the 2nd quarter kept the Pies noses in front.

The home team came out firing in the third quarter and in a flurry of goalscoring in the context of the match booted 4 goals to lead by a match high 15 points and only late goals to Tom Michael and Sean Mewing kept the Pies in range at the final change, only 7 points in arrears.

The Magpies dominated the final quarter possessions and inside 50s but butchered several goal scoring chances and it was only the late goal from Michael that enabled them to escape with the 4 points.

Val Pope continued his good form with plenty of possessions in midfield and had good support from the consistent Drew Mitchell, Tim McEvoy and Callum Carseldine. Sunny Aneet also gathered plenty of possessions on a wing.

Tom Michael worked hard in ruck and up forward in his return match and was rewarded with 2 timely goals, both with long kicks.

Doug Lawrence was his usual uncompromising self in defence and Matt Davis was again good across half back. Riley Easton's  pace, hustle and tackling pressure caused plenty of turnovers.

The Magpies travel to Surfer's Paradise next Saturday and the selectors have the pleasant task of trying to fit Alex Dickfos, Hayden Thick, Lachlan Woods and Aaron Maricic into a team coming off 3 quality wins on the trot.

Mack Trucks Match Review - Reserves vs Wilston Grange

Andrew Thomson

RESERVES GO DOWN IN TIGHT MATCH

The Western Magpies Reserves were gallant in defeat against third placed Wilston Grange on Saturday.

The Pies were in the match until mid way through the final quarter when the Gorillas sealed the match with two late goals. The Pies went down by 25 points, 11.10-76 to 7.9- 51.

A slow start by the Magpies had them on the back foot immediately as Wilston Grange kicked 5 first quarter goals.

The Magpies hit back with a dominant second quarter to lead by 6 points at half time.

However the home side worked their way back into the match in the third quarter and then were able to take control late in the final quarter. The Magpies decision making after half time let them down with kicks often going straight to the opposition or kicking to outnumbered teammates.

The Magpies were missing several key players which told in the end. Veteran Chris Mihalopoulos, who backed up from a full game on Friday night booted 3 goals for the Pies but the young players struggled in the end against bigger bodied opponents.

Best players were defenders Gabe McKinnon and Sean McEvoy, midfielders Logan Murray, Bryce Crossley and Ben Hooper.

Liam Dwyer returning from long term injury also played well in ruck.

Despite the loss the Pies are still a chance to make the finals with very winnable matches in their last 5 games.

Mack Trucks Match Preview - DOUBLE CHANCE UP FOR GRABS

Andrew Thomson

The Western Magpies can cement third place on the QAFL ladder and a double chance in the finals with a victory over fellow finals contender Wilston Grange at Stafford on Saturday.

This is a round 4 catch up match on the QAFL bye weekend after the scheduled match was postponed after a particularly big deluge in May sending Brisbane traffic into chaos and PBI Oval under water.

This will be the second match between the finals contenders and traditional rivals in the past 2 weeks and it was the Magpies who had a good victory in the first clash at Chelmer.

It almost smells of a finals format when sides would often meet a fortnight apart and for the Pies they need to be wary that in many of those  finals series the second result was never always the same.

The Gorillas brains trust will no doubt have analysed their recent loss and will have new plans in place to counter the Magpies and this has potential danger written all over it for the Black and White. Grange were missing several key players in the first clash so this match still shapes as a tightly fought contest and coach Glenn Humphrey and his coaching staff will have stressed the need for all players to be focused from the first bounce.

The Magpies will be without two key players in ruckman Hayden Thick and key forward Alex Dickfos who had planned trips for the bye weekend.  Both were among the better players in the win two weeks ago.

Also missing from last week are Redlands pair Jordan Bain and Jak Williams--full-forward Bain recalled to Redlands NEAFL team and small forward Williams unavailable due to pre-planned bye weekend break. . Also out is winger Aaron Maricic playing for Queensland Under 18s at Ballarat.

Into the team after several weeks out with injury comes key forward Tom Michael who will also help out in the ruck, half forward Matt Thompson and small forward Riley Easton,  both recalled after recent stints in the Reserves and half back Jae Humphrey.  It will be Matt Thompson's 100th senior game for the Pies.

The loss of Dickfos and Bain has resulted in a re-shuffle up forward with the Pies going for a smaller unit with  Val Pope at full forward and Thompson and Easton into the pockets. Matt Hockley has been good at CHF recently and he and Sam Copland provide some height across half forward and the Pies could swing either Brady Allen or Luke Scott forward if needed.

Syd Guildford Award winner and new Dad Drew Mitchell hopefully will stay awake long enough to do his usual thing with multiple midfield possessions as well as contributing on the scoreboard.

Partner in crime Tim McEvoy also wins plenty of ball and directs traffic and he will also team with Ben Jaenke-Cain and the workaholic Callum Carseldine to again assert midfield control for the Pies.

Dom Beer will shoulder most of the ruck work in the absence of Thick with Tom Michael to lend a hand--Beer did well against the big Grange ruckmen last time and will need to be at his best for the Pies to win the midfield battles.

The back line looks rock solid with the half back line of Luke Scott, Matt Davis and Doug Lawrence arguably in the top four vote winners this year and ably backed up by Chris Hunt and the run of Luke Mitchell and Richard Wenham.

This is a big match for the Magpies, perhaps yet another another 8 point game.  A  win gets them a game clear of the Gorillas and on track for a top three finish and the double chance-a loss throws the fight for third wide open again.

The Magpies will be up for a big effort to consolidate third place on the ladder.

Place Preview - Another Crunch Game for Reserves

Andrew Thomson

With every match now assuming finals-like importance the Western Magpies Reserves can take another big step toward what looked like a finals appearance a month ago, with another win over third placed Wilston Grange on Saturday.

The Pies had a good win over the Gorillas a fortnight ago and then followed it up with a resounding victory over Broadbeach last week to turn their season around.

The Pies have several changes to the team with Matt Thompson, Riley Easton and Jae Humphrey promoted to the Seniors and Jadan Morton and Brodie Easton other players unavailable due to a pre-planned bye weekend break.

In comes Redlands listed ruckman Liam Dwyer after a lay off with a hand injury which will be a big help to the Pies in ruck as back up ruckman Tadiwa Parirenyatwa suffered a serious knee injury at training on Thursday night. Dwyer will take some of the load off young ruckman Monty Vine who has been good recently.

Matt Garland up forward must be close to a senior recall but he will be a key player if the Pies are to repeat their victory of 2 weeks ago.  Jake Heard has returned to his explosive best across half forward and Luke de Nys gets better each week now he has shrugged off his injury woes.

In midfield the consistent Bryce Crossley with support from the ever improving Logan Murray, Matt Mazarolle and Ben Hooper will need to get their hands on the football to drive the Pies forward.

Key defenders Sean McEvoy and Gabe McKinnon have both been excellent  and have had good support from James Page and Nathan Morrow, another pair getting better with each match.

The Magpies are  not be at full strength this week and it will take a big effort to prevail, but a win will be vital in the push toward a finals position at year's end.

Metis Wealth Milestone - Matt Thompson Clocks up 100 Senior Games

Andrew Thomson

Matt Thompson will "clock" up his 100th Senior game for the Western Magpies on Saturday.

The popular Thompson grew up at Tocumwal on the Murray River, before playing junior football for the Wagga Tigers prior to his family moving to Brisbane in 1998. He played at Everton for a year as a junior but due to player shortage decided to play with Sherwood and started at Chelmer in 1999 in the Under 14s under Kevin Stephens. He played junior football for the Magpies until 2002 when his family moved to Victoria and he went to board at Assumption College, Kilmore, famous for producing many top line AFL players.

Nicknamed "Clock" by a good mate in reference to him being born with a shortened right arm - "one short hand and one long hand!" - Thompson captained the second XVIII team, but forced his way into the First XVIII side towards the end of the season, and was part of a senior schoolboy premiership. While at Assumption, he played for Tocumwal (his original home town) during the school holiday breaks, and made this senior debut as a 17 year old.

His family returned to Brisbane in 2006 and it was natural for him to link up with the Western Magpies. In a successful year that yielded premierships for both the reserve and senior teams, he was best on ground in the Magpies Reserves premiership.

He graduated to Senior Football in 2007 under Paul Grentell, playing his first match against Mayne. Later that year he was a member of the team which was eventually runner up.

In 2008, he was part of a memorable Senior Magpies Premiership. He was named among the best in the 2012 Grand Final, his second senior premiership over arch rivals Palm Beach Currumbin.

During 2009-2010, he played a number of reserves matches when the Pies were again promoted to the QAFL State League (prior to the formation of the NEAFL), winning the QAFL Reserves leading goalkicker in 2009.

Clock is a favourite at Chelmer and has excited supporters with some big grabs and his goalkicking, which is usually reliable from inside 40 metres. His reading of the play and ability to take marks, as well as using clean ball handling skills are often marvelled at by both supporters and opponents alike. Interestingly, he is a right foot kick despite the right arm being the shorter one, however guides the ball with his left hand and rarely misses targets.

He has also had his share of injuries, missing large parts of the 2010 season with a torn PCL, and 2013 with a broken leg. He has recovered from these injuries to be a key player as the Western Magpies push toward a top three finish this season.

Thompson's time in the Seniors may be coming to an end as the former primary school teacher is just about to finish his medical degree and will become a doctor at the end of the year. Work will prevent him from playing regularly after this season so he he will be keen to have the Pies finish this year on a high note.

Thompson lists a number of players which he regards as the best he has played with. Among them are Anthony Corrie, Ed McDonnell, Jimmy Rozynski, Chris Mihalopoulos, and current teammates Luke Scott, Tim McEvoy and Val Pope.

Coopers QAFL Update - Competition for Spots!

From the QAFL Tuesday Talking Points (Credit: Andrew Wiles)

The Western Magpies QAFL Reserves side might be sitting on the bottom of ladder, but they didn’t play like it on Saturday when they knocked off Broadbeach by 114-points. There’s a clear link between most of the Magpies list fit and firing out on the park, and strong performances by both sides. There are a few blokes putting their hands up for senior selection as well, with Matt Thompson bagging three up forward, and the Easton brothers getting a heap of it between them. Things are tracking along nicely down at Chelmer.

Coopers are a proud 2015 Sponsor of the Western Magpies and proud partners of the Sherwood Football Club.  Next time you're down the club for a meal or to cheer the Pies home, be sure to support your team and reward your tastebuds, by drinking Coopers!

Sci-Fleet Toyota Star Performer - Drew Mitchell - Syd Guilford Nominee

Andrew Thomson

It’s been a big week in the Mitchell household. Today, Drew became the round 13 Syd Guildford nominee for his performance against Broadbeach on Saturday, and on Monday, he and partner Casey welcomed their first born, Scarlett, into the world.

“I don’t know what sleep is anymore and it’s only been two days,” Mitchell joked.

Mitchell was a huge cog in the Western Magpies midfield that grinded out a win against Broadbeach on the weekend.

Not only did he get a heap of the pill, he managed to get on his bike and become damaging up forward, finishing with two majors.

“The good thing about our team at the moment is that there are no individual stars at times, it’s such a blanket effort, on any given day anyone can step up and do something, kick a goal or get the team to lift, I was just lucky it was me on the weekend,” he said.

The Magpies walked away with the four points, but it was a dogfight in the middle.

“They are really aggressive. They love to get in and tackle, and they are a great attacking running side,” Mitchell said.

“I found them very hard to chase, a bit like Labrador in that regard, they run hard forward, so you are always up against it.

Mitchell has played every game in the seniors this year, something he puts down to getting miles in the legs.

“I think being fit. At the start of last year I got a job up north outside of Ingham, so I didn’t have a big pre-season. So when I came back home, it was great to get a full pre-season under my belt,” he said.

“Now that the running is there, getting the football is a lot easier.”

While he might head the list of possessions week in week out, he is a very important role player.

“It’s just about playing my role at the moment. I’m probably not going to get 30 possessions like Ben Janke-Caine does every week, I’ve just been playing my role and doing what I have to do for the team, and it’s been pretty consistent in that regard,” Mitchell said.

As for what that role is?

“I don’t want to give all our secrets away, it’s about just living by our rules. Defend first, and two way running,” he said.

It’s been a great year to date for the boys from Chelmer, there two games against Labrador this year still don’t sit well with him.

“The first one, you could say we were coming off a bit of a high in round 1 only losing by two points to Morningside because we didn’t know who we were as a group, but the second one definitely,” he said.

“There were times in that third quarter when they were kicking away when we had just as many opportunities, to lose the way we have stings a lot.

“We are better than that; we just haven’t put it together against them.”

They might have risen quickly up the ranks in 2015, but the Western Magpies certainly aren’t content with stopping there.

“We want to win a flag. At the end of the day that’s what we are all about. We have still got some pretty good teams we have to beat, but I want to win that flag,” Mitchell said.

“If we can’t do that, to keep improving and be bigger and better for next year.”

Fans will get a taste for finals a few months early this year when the Magpies travel to Wilston Grange this Saturday, to replay the game that was washed out earlier in the year.
