PLACE PREVIEW - MAGPIES BIGGEST TEST YET AGAINST DEFENDING PREMIERS

The Western Magpies travel down the highway to do battle with an old rival in Palm Beach-Currumbin in QAFL Round 4 action on Saturday.

The Pies  have been close in their two losses to the teams who now sit 1-2 on top of the ladder with 3-0 records so they are close to the benchmark of the league. However, they will have another test of their credentials against the 2017 Premiers who flexed their muscles in downing Labrador and then put Sandgate to the sword in the past two weeks and now boast a % close to 300.

The Lions have added a couple of recruits to the team the Pies defeated in pre-season action so with 4 points on the line it will be a new challenge for the Pies. And it is looming as an 8 point game for the Magpies--the reality is that a loss will see the Pies with a 0-3 record despite strong early season form, but close losses don't deliver finals football or 4 points unfortunately and the Pies will be looking to close out the win when given the opportunities going forward.

The Pies made one change to their side with Redlands listed but ex-Magpie Mitchell Stallard replacing fellow Redlands player Stephen Mills. Stallard has silky skills and will be a handy inclusion for the Pies.

The Pies have had 10 minute lapses in both matches to date which resulted in three quick goals to their opponents so they must work to stop run-ons from opposition teams. They have also reaped the rewards of dominant periods in attack and a lot of work went into the forward line structure in the past two weeks.

Ryan Harwood showed his class last match as he warmed to the task and he will only get better and with Anthony Corrie on the other flank the Pies will look to open up the forward line and spread the scoring. Jake De Winter is the x-factor and given space can rip a game open.

The midfield has been solid for the Pies and ruckman Dylan Adkins was good last match as he also eases into QAFL football. Tom Ielasi and Drew Mitchell are consistent performers and Jono Macanawai will be better for his first match a fortnight ago, and will be looking fresh after a 2week break given his Magpie debut was his 3rd match in 7 days.

The Pies defence will need to be at their best as the Lions have some talented key forwards. Aaron Highlands moves to full-back and will need the likes of David Lewis and Harry Marshall to assist in taming the Lions forwards. 

The pecking order in the QAFL is still to be established with so many variables at present, but the Lions credentials are clear to see, while the Pies have a good record at Salk Oval.

With backs to the wall the Pies will come out firing and are more than capable of a win to get their 2018 season on track.

RESERVES STILL STRONG DESPITE CHANGES

The Western Magpies will still field a strong Reserves team for their clash with Palm Beach-Currumbin at Palm Beach on Saturday in Round 4 of QAFL action.

The Pies have been forced to make 6 changes to the team that had a strong win over Broadbeach a fortnight ago. Lachlan Woods succumbed to a foot injury--a shame as he was potentially on the verge of a senior recall-- while  Rory Johnson and Lucas Jackson both miss with injury, Brodie Easton unavailable and Rohan Smith is ill..

In comes Gerard Moore, a former senior captain for his first match at Senior or Reserves level after 3 seasons with the Woodsmen , young livewire Sam Parker and exciting young forward Jack Austin, who returns from Brisbane Lions Academy duties and after a Round 1 QAFL Rising Star nomination, he will be eager to press for a senior recall. Also in are three youngsters in Braydon Thomas, Angus Wyllie and Sempitake Kwizera.  Thomas was superb for the Woodsmen the last 2 weeks and Kwizera also had a run in the Woodsmen last week and showed good touch to underline the value of the Woodsmen side returning under the Magpie banner as the 3rds outfit.

Brady Allen and Aaron Maricic returned to form last match and would have been close to a senior recall but the bye did not help them and they get another opportunity to press their claimsthis week against strong opposition.  The half back line of Allen, Chris Hunt and the rejuvenated Peter Kilroy is strong and will be a springboard for the Pies attack. Up forward Val Pope poses a threat to the Lions defence and with strong marking Jeremy DeRooy and Jack Austin in the key forward posts the Pies have some serious goal kicking power.  Riley Easton booted 4 goals last week and he will be keen to press his senior claims as well.

Nathan Congram in ruck has been a key driver for the Pies and  with the consistent Bryce Crossley and young rover Sam DeNys in the middle the Pies will match their opponents.

The Pies face a tough challenge especially on the Coast but a win at Salk Oval can set up their season.

Coopers Friday Night Footy - Round 6 Preview

The top of the table Woodsmen head down the Mt Lindsay Highway tomorrow evening to take on old foes, the Jimboomba Redbacks who currently sit in 6th place after returning to the Division 1 Friday Night competition in 2018.

The Redbacks and Woodsmen have slugged it out in some huge battles over the last decade, including consecutive Grand Finals in 2009 and 2010, sharing a win each.  The Woodies were also knocked out of finals by the Redbacks in 2012, 2013 (extra time) and 2016 - so the rivalry remains strong.

As is always the case with the Woodsmen, there are 8 changes to the side that comfortably accounted for Maroochydoore at McCarthy Homes Oval last week.  Out go Will Lloyd, Ryan Colcough, Sam Banim (all unavailable), Andrew Thomson, Scott Matthews, Jeffson Fehr-Smith (both injured) Sempatike Kwizera & Braydon Thomas (Reserves)

Into the side come Matty Prior, Greg Matthews, Brodie Easton, Tim McEvoy, Shayne Baldwyn, Max Webber, Andrew Bell & Simon Purkiss - a massive mix of experience and youth.  Welcome to Max Webber and Brodie Easton who make their Woodies debut!

The Woodsmen were extremely clean with their ball movement last week, especially dangerous on the rebound from half-back. Despite significant changes through the backline and midfield, there is sufficient experience, skill and smarts to continue this brand of football in the expansive Redbacks home deck.

Gabe McKinnon, despite starring in a key defensive post last week will shift into the ruck in the absence of Andrew Thomson and due to the abundance of defenders in the 22 this week - a few players will be given an opportunity to show their talents around goal.

A ground level on-ball division of Chris Judson, Brodie Easton and Sam Curtis will have ample rotations with Ben Ness coming through the bench and the ability of Chris Davis and Shayne Baldwin to push through the middle. 

As with any Woodsmen side, the back 6 looks extremely solid once again, despite changes to both key posts with the inclusion of Andrew Bell and veteran Simon Purkiss.  The experience and footy smarts of Tim McEvoy and the Young brothers, Josh and Travis will be important as the Woodies set up behind the ball, while Nick Kelly offers excellent speed and dash from deep in defence.

Up front there is plenty of firepower, with Matt Hockley in a rich vein of form kicking 12 goals across the previous 2 rounds and 2017 competition leading goalkicker Chris Mihalopoulos coming out of the square.  Chris Davis offers good decision making going forward and superb defensive pressure, while the mercurial Shayne Baldwyn is good for a couple of hangers, a goal of the year contender and the odd clanger as well!

Some deep thoughts from deep in the nest!

• Broadbeach and Mt Gravatt on top of the QAFL ladder  with a 3-0  record with Palm Beach-Currumbin 2-0 after a first round bye. Cooincidentally, these are the Magpies first 3 opponents for 2018!
• Two close losses to the Vultures and Cats means the Pies should about the mark to be a top five team and there is no greater test than this week when the Pies travel to the Coast to take on last season's QAFL Premiers Palm Beach-Currumbin on their home turf.
• Plenty of 'should haves and would haves' getting around voer the years though, the players will be keen to start banking 4 points sooner rather than later
• Brydan Morgan in his 2nd year as a Senior Coach would certainly almost be allergic to the old chestnut 'honourable loss' having now coached 8 games decided by 15 points or less for just the 1 victory in Toowoomba last year after holding a 57 point lead at one stage in that match! He's certainly due a few close wins!
• It is still hard to get a good fix on the QAFL this year with Labrador 0-3 and Morningside 1-2, we suspect it will be a few more weeks before a true form guide can be determined. 
• Good to see Mitch "Sharky" Stallard at the Broadbeach game as he recovers from a broken hand-- geez he hasn't had a lot of luck with injuries. He will likely line up for the Pies when he returns and his silky skills will be appreciated at McCarthy Homes Oval
• At the Mt Gravatt match Will Fozard did the senior runners job and Matt "Clock" Thompson  was up from Canberra and watched the Reserves before heading off to Gerard Moore's Engagement party.  Not great timing from the big fella scheduling it up against Round 1 of the QAFL!
• The Magpies Colts sit second on the ladder despite last Saturday’s bye and come up against a PBC Colts team which has only had one game –a narrow 1 point win over Labrador—so is a bit of an unknown quantity. The Pies Colts had a good win in a practice match against the Lions so if that form line holds should be well placed to remain undefeated.
• The Woodsmen remain undefeated at the top of the QFA Friday night ladder after a strong win over third placed Maroochydore at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer last Friday night
• Chris Judson again prominent, and Matt Hockley bagging another 6 sausage rolls as well.
• Scott 'Burnsy' Matthews was impressive, despite at one point (much to the amusement of the crowd) to appear to be running away from the ball when he was working hard back to defence, unaware a Roos midfielder and played on and was running just 2 steps behind him with the ball. Had Burnsy turned around, its possible there would have been a collision as both players seemed completely unaware of each other!
• With a strong Magpies Reserves outfit, the Woodsmen aren't just being driven by experienced senior players, but an injection of youth. after an injury riddled couple of years, Braydon Thomas was superb on the wing on Friday and will be pushing for a spot in the Reserves before too long.
• --David “Barts” Bartlet is a fixture at Chelmer and does a power of work off the field to ensure the precinct at McCarthy Homes Oval  is presented at its best each week.
• Good old Barts is a Life Member of the club and continues to give his all to his beloved Pies. He once again mans the hamburger stand and he makes by far the best hamburgers in the QAFL, daylight second.
• Bart’s offsider is Robert Hartley who also helps out at Sherwood junior matches where his  grand-son Keaton plays in the Under 14s. Robert says he helps out at the seniors to ensure his grand-son  still has a club he can progress to in Senior football. And he must have been a handy footballer in his day, playing with Sturt in the SANFL and Sandy Bay in Tasmania FL.   Bloody ripper!!
• Magpies Golf day was held on Sunday, and unsurprisingly the turnout was a little low given it was the bye for the senior squad, a long weekend and Collingwood were in town
• Winners of the Golf Day Andrew Thomson and Scott Bermingham produced some quality golf to be 2 under par off the stick, with 'Thommo' last seen dashing off to the Gabba to see his beloved Pies almost break his heart yet again.
• Great to see 6 Sherwood lads taking part in the QLD U16 Academy Series last week, as the club continues to develop quality players from within.
• Colts Assistant Coach Kiran 'special K' Verma rumoured to have had his best game in many years for the Woodsmen on Friday night, racking up 30+ disposals across half back and actually spoiling a couple of marks and allegedly getting some hardball gets (video evidence required) - turns out he was just trying to impress his young Colts charges who had come along to assist with off field volunteer jobs.
• Just to underline what a 'footy head' he is, Special K backed up on Saturday morning to play Division 1 football for Yeronga with ex Magpie Coach and Woodsmen footballer Sam Long chasing a few numbers to get his Devils side on the park. not sure how long a 30+ year old body can handle that (perhaps the lack of hard ball gets over the years is the secret?!)

Coopers Friday Night Footy - Match Review

Woodies go 5-0 to sit top of the table

The Woodsmen took on competition new comers and one of the in form sides of Friday Night footy in the Maroochydoore Roos at McCarthy Homes Oval last Friday night.

Marchoochydoore are a quality outfit from a quality club, who won Premierships in 2017 in Seniors, Reserves, Colts and Thirds in 2017 - so they know plenty about winning!

It was a frenetic start with Chris Judson combining with Sam Curtis to win the opening clearance after sharking the Roos tap leading to an early goal from the in form Matt Hockley.

From there it was a bit of end to end footy with the ball zipping around, thanks to an injection of youth to the Woodsmen outfit in recent weeks and what appeared to be a young Roos side (relatively speaking!)

The quarter time break came with the Woodsmen holding a slender 2 point lead.  However from there, the Woodsmen took over the contest playing some excellent footy to kick 10 goals to 5 over the remaining 3 quarters.

The attacking run from half back was particularly strong, with Kiran Verma, Josh Young and Gabe McKinnon providing a 4 quarter effort of quality rebounding defence, often turning defence into attack with intercept marking and linking up with wingers in Sempatike Kwizera and the hugely impressive Braydon Thomas who played a superb game after a few difficult years with injury.

Some depth through the midfield was also extremely handy with a combination of Chris Judson, Sam Curtis, Will Lloyd, Ben Ness and Ryan Colcough rotating through the middle to give the Magpies constant attacking drive that has been lacking in recent years due to limited rotations through the engine room.

Up forward, Irish Sam Banim was at his usual exciting best, with some high flying and crumbing goals, while Alec Parsons presented well all day as a hit up forward and found himself in dangerous positions to finish with 2 goals.  Matt Hockley has finally been released from the midfield and has flourished in his last 2 outings in the forwardline to again finish with 6 goals, including an absolute beauty from the boundary line approx 45m out from a set shot.

The aforementioned depth through the midfield has also allowed Chris Davis to be released to a half forward flank where his superb defensive pressure and quality delivery going inside 50 is a feature.  Meanwhile, down back - Scott Burnsy Matthews has quietly slotted into fullback and provided leadership and footy smarts to direct traffic and lock down on quality opponents, like a fine wine...!

While the Woodsmen eventually ran out 33 point winners, many of the players agreed that Maroochydoore were the best side they had encountered in 2018 so far, but with the Woodies naming a strong side and taking their opportunities they were able to get on some for a strong win.

Sci Fleet - Golf Day 2018

It was a low key affair at the 2018 Western Magpies Golf Day at 2018, with a minor scheduling hiccup causing a clash with a long weekend, bye week and the Collingwood game - attendance was always going to be a little light on.  Hindsight for 2019!

Despite this, 20+ keen golfers arrived at Oxley Golf Club including some club legends such as Warren Selvage and Greg Butler to name just two.  It was also great to see a good mix of current players, former players from different eras, sponsors and also club stalwarts such as Laurie Nipperess in attendance.

It was a slightly windy affair favouring the accomplished player in a 2 man ambrose format, with the golf course and the bar likely the true winners!

Club President, Andrew Thomson and U10 Magpies Team Manager Scott Bermingham came in early with a solid round of -2 off the stick for a nett score of 64.75 (2 man ambrose hcp is calculated by combining your 2 hcps and dividing by 4).

Once it became obvious this score would be tough to beat, cards were few and far between as weary players headed straight for the bar or the Gabba to see a quality contest where good prevailed over evil with a Magpies win by 7 points!

Anthony Corrie was seen striking them sweetly off the tee and Chris Dennis was noted for his smooth action around the greens.  Brady Allen and David Hammill appeared to weilding blunt axes, while Bryce Crossley with all the hubris about being defending champ barely provided a whimper.  Fair to say 2017 bar must have been set fairly low if he was part of the winning team, or Tom Ielasi is a sneaky Jason Day in disguise!

The winning team carded 4 birdies and an eagle, while also giving a few shots back late with some careless bogeys.

Arabon Financial Services - U16 Academy Player Update

At the recent QLD State Academy Championships, the Sherwood Magpies were represented by 6 players - a fantastic effort!

The annual Under 16 State Academy Championships was completed over the weekend

Representative teams from Brisbane South, Brisbane North, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, North Queensland and South Pacific will compete in the four day carnival.

AFL Manager Talent and Academies NSW/QLD, Mark Browning, said the Under 16 State Academy Championships are a key component of the AFL Academy Program, which aims to identify and develop the skills of talented young players.

“These championships provide the boys with a high-level and enjoyable football environment that gives them an opportunity to hone their skills,” said Browning.

“They are fresh from their local AFL club Academy or Summer Training program and now have the opportunity to represent their region, which is a great experience.

“AFL players such as Dayne Zorko (Brisbane Lions), David Armitage (St Kilda), Jarrod Harbrow (Gold Coast SUNS) and Brendan Whitecross (Hawthorn) are products of the Under 16 State Academy Championships and we are looking forward to seeing the next crop of potential  AFL stars in action.”

The carnival acts as a predecessor to the Under 16’s National Championships which runs from June 11-14, and a representative team will be selected for the forthcoming carnival.

• Down again in a tight contest, with 5 losses in 2017 by less than 3 goals - the Magpies will soon start getting on the right side of the ledger in the close ones
• Broadbeach gifted THREE goals by switch kicks that missed targets, and those Cats sure did pounce. Final margin?  THREE goals!
• Who kicked THREE for the Cats? Pies 2008 Premiership player Chook Fowler of course!  He crossed to the Cats after spending 2017 at Southport after a stint in the WAFL where he won a Premiership with West Perth.
• The Pies have a bad habit of playing catch-up footy against the Cats, after both clashes last year the Pies went down after giving away big starts.  On Saturday, the Cats got a quickfire THREE goal start.  Seems THREE not a good number this week, luckily we have the round THREE bye!
• Broadbeach used the footy better than the Pies, and were good on transition.  the Pies lifted their intensity and pressure at the contest in the second quarter, and were rewarded with a half-time lead.
• there were two crucal 11 point plays as the Pies missed simple chances, only for a coast to coast reply to punish the boys in Black & White.
• While the Pies have started 0-2, they have played two contenders, and after narrow losses in games the Pies controlled for large parts - it shows we are up there with the best of them
• Quiet observers suggest the standard of QAFL has gone up a notch or two on the previous two seasons, can't say we disagree.
• Recent heavyweight sides in Morningside and Labrador are also meeting with 'owen and his two mates', combine that with Surfers sitting pretty at 2-zip with quality wins and it shows the comp is evening up and you have to be on your game every week
• This is now news to anyone, but Ryan Harwood is a gun and will only get better - his performance on Saturday was superb with great balance, clean skills in traffic and accurate kicking. the Pies youth will learn plenty from his example
• Davey Lewis is also a bonafide gun and continues where he left in 2017, playing strong consistent football. He backs his judgement and rarely makes a mistake.  Works hard to get back deep in defence when needed and his disposal is top shelf.  In cross-code jargon, he is the Pies quarterback!
• No 'Nuxy' you haven't been forgotten.  Another bloke with AFL level experience, Nux has not been able to get off the leash in the first two matches with some pretty average tight checking that seems to have been noted by everyone but the blokes that matter.  Man handled and ridden into the ground. Though the Pies may be a little guilty of targeting him too often, no doubt something they're aware of.
• The umps certainly have a tough job, but the Pies were certainly on the rough end of the stick in Round 2.  In a 33 minute final quarter, the Pies were still within 6 points at the 30 minute mark, but good tackles went unrewarded, while the boys in black & white had their heads taken off at times with nothing given.
• 'The phantom poster' - another strange one in the 2nd quarter when Nux drilled a set shot through for a clear goal, goal umpire unmoved and ready to signal a goal, Broady players silent only for a field umpire to charge in from 40m and claim it hit the post and overrule a goal umpire in perfect position.  Strange stuff, must have been a phantom post!
• Jake De Winter had 5 goals at the 10 minute mark of the 3rd quarter, but the ball wasn't directed to him much in a tight final quarter.  He's a mercurial player with a certain x-factor around the big sticks.  Despite the exasperation caused to the coaches box when he fails to lead at the footy, he will win the Pies some games this year if he converts the good work of a quality midfield.
• Bit of a worry that the same gent with 5 goals on the weekend is already talking up the end of season trip before he played a game, no problems there as long as he keeps enjoying his footy!
• Another bloke appearing to enjoy his footy is former Captain Lachy Woods, who was terrific for the Reserves on Saturday.  Some trademark bustling contests bright a grin to his face, as well as the Magpie faithful.
• Aaron Maricic looks a bit fitter after 2 rounds, showing his class with 4 snags in the Reserves.  He reads the play well, has clean skills and rarely wastes a chance in front of goal.
• Speaking of the Magoos, what a difference a week makes!  The highly fancies Round 1 side never turned up to play and were comfortably beaten by a quality Vultures outfit.
• Some more handy inclusions in the Easton brothers, Chris Hunt, Rohan smith and Sean McEvoy to a team already containing plenty of senior experience made Des Lashman's side a pretty handy one.
• The Reserves game was a seriously high standard contest, with both teams likely not looking out of place in senior competitions in suburban or country leagues.
• Centre Half Forward is a bit of a problem for the Magpies at the moment, without a big strong marking target prowling the arc, the Magpies don't have the get out of jail option when coming forward, hence getting caught a few times trying to work it forward with precise short kicks.  Plenty of time and options here though, and the brains trust will be all over it.
• Dougy Lawrence wore number 50 in Round 1, and 49 in Round 2.  If he wants to replace De Winter in the #1 guernsey, it should be about 2020 when he gets there!
• We all want whatever Pete Kilroy is having for dinner.  He must have found the elixir of youth as he turns back the clock to be the Pies Reserves best player off half back.  He looks very fit and his ability to play tall or small, along with his trusty left peg driving the Pies forward is an important factor for the magoos.  Killa must be close to 200 games at the Pies and is enjoying his return to Chelmer after 2 years in Sydney and a Premiership with the UTS bats.
• Some big names in the Woodsmen outfit who claimed top spot on the ladder on Friday night, with 2017 Woodsmen Best & Fairest and ex Senior Captain Gerard Moore having a run to get him fitter for a tilt at some senior action later in the year.
• 200 gamer, senior Premiership player and unassuming Club Secretary Gabe McKinnon was spotted being sprayed with water in the post match song on Friday.  While he might be a life member, it was still his 'Woodies debut' and he got the requisite treatment.
• With the return of Andrew Thomson this week, and Mitchell Merritt and Gabe McKinnon also having a kick - the Sherwood Football Club board of Directors is well represented in the Woodsmen outfit!  No word from Chris Dennis, Martin Sinfield or Adam Edwards on when they plan on dusting off the boots!
• Matt Hockley also turned out for the Woodsmen and booted a bag of 6 goals in his 2nd year of Friday night footy where he has largely been deployed in the midfield.  With 2017 competition leading goalkicker and Magpie legend Chris Mihalopouolos set to return this week, there could be a battle to see who is the spearhead, though the playing coach tends to win these arguments....!
• Super recruit Jono Macanawai had a quality senior debut on Saturday, with srong attack on the footy, clean skills and smooth moves in traffic, but in the last few minutes he looked to be running on the spot.  Little wonder, given he played two matches during the week for the NZ national side in Wellington, one of them against the All-Australian u/17 side where the young Aussies were victorious.
• Reserves coach Des Lashman is the quintessential footy person and bleeds black & white (forget about his Richmond allegiances!) Des was forced to make a late change to his Round 1 side, forcing someone out of the side, the unfortunate player being Sean McEvoy.  Lasho had the players in stitches when he thanked Sean for 'volunteering' to step aside - the look on Smacks face told another story, but he backed up and trained hard during the week to earna recall and be a solid contributor (even a goal) in the Reserves round 2 win.
• Magpie #1 supporter Heathy Palmer was the Reserves umpire escort on Saturday and did a fantastic job protecting the men in green.  Heathy loves to join the Magpie huddle to sing the song after a good win, and is a much loved fixture at McCarthy Homes Oval
• The QAFL Colts side coached by Jake Fuentes and Kiran Verma sit atop the QAFL ladder after two strong wins to start the season.  Young Toowoomba product Jayden Johnson booted 5 goals in Round 1 to show some class.
• The players had a 'Wacky Wig' night after the match on Saturday and it is rumoured that Val Pope looked so good, Lsho nearly planted a kiss on him!  Lachy Woods should come before the fines committee for re-using old props, step up your game Woodsy, we've seen that one before!
• Doc Thompson was quick to attend to the Broadbeach Captain on the weekend, patching him up at half-time before he went on to arguably be the difference in the 2nd half.  It was suggested the Doc may have been too kind, but we know with our Doc that he is colour blind when it comes to an injured player!
• Great to see a large contingent of Broadbeach players and officials staying back at the clubrooms for a beer and a yarn after the match, this breaks down barriers between clubs and is good for the game - more of the same please!
• It was heartbreak this week for new recruit Lucas Jackson who has ruptured his ACL after going down early in the Reserves match on Saturday.  a big bodied player who came across from Moorooka this year, Jackson has plenty of upside and provided good key position options for Lasho in the 2s and remains a senior prospect in the future.  All at the Pies wish the big fella good luck in his recovery, and he has the clubs full support.
• This made the Pies win in the 2's all the more impressive considering the loss of Jackson was combined with tweaked Rory Johnson hamstring in the first minute, likely putting him out for close to 6 weeks.

• With the Senior/Colts bye this week, make sure you get down on Friday night as the Woodsmen take on Maroochydoore at McCarthy Homes Oval

MCCARTHY HOMES MATCH REVIEW - PIES LET ANOTHER ONE SLIP

The Western Magpies have let another one slip through their hands when they were defeated by a very good Broadbeach side on the weekend. In another high standard contest the Pies were right in the contest well into time on in the last quarter but as was the theme of the day, some controversial decisions gifted the Cats goals and blew the margin out to 18 points in what was a tough loss.

Broadbeach shot out of the blocks early, kicking with the breeze to open up a 20 point lead in the first 10 minutes of play.  The Magpies began to assert themselves at the contest and peg the lead back to 14 points at quarter time.

The Pies continued to control the flow of the game in the 2nd quarter, but failed to take their opportunities with 9 scoring shots to 3 and a strong inside 50 ascendancy, only to hold just a 7 point half time lead.  It could have been more but for some wayward kicking, and a strange overrule from the field umpire after Corrie kicked a clear goal that had the goal umpire in no doubt.

Kicking with the breeze in the 3rd quarter, the Cats managed to square up the contest and were playing some good football with some transitions from half back leading to scoring opportunities and a 3/4 time lead of 4 points.

After a thrilling Round 1 finish the Magpies were again in it up to their eyeballs in another close encounter, but with the breeze at their backs, and the opening 2 goals to take a 10 point lead they perhaps needed to put the foot down and make sure of it as Broadbeach managed to come home with 4 late goals to steal the win by 18 points.

Jaenke-Cain was again busy through the midfield and Adkins had a superb match in the ruck after being well beaten in Round 1.  De Winter returned to the forward line and had 5 goals to midway through the 3rd quarter, yet still retains room for improvement with so much talent to burn.  Doug Lawrence was again solid across half-back, while David Lewis continues to show he is one of the elite players in the competition with his drive off half back, reading of the play and pin point disposal.

The Pies are now 0-2 and face a must win match against 2017 Premiers Palm Beach at Palm Beach on Saturday week after a bye on the long weekend. The Magpies had a good practice match win 3 weeks ago against the Lions but that means nothing when 4 premiership points are up for grabs.

RESERVES BACK ON TRACK

In a high standard Reserves match the Western Magpies bounced back from a poor Round 1 showing to record a good win over Broadbeach. With an influx of players with plenty of Senior experience the Pies got on top in the third quarter to run out solid 25 point winner.

Brady Allen was back to his best and will be pushing for a Senior recall along with Lachlan Woods and Aaron Maricic. All three obviously needed the run last week as they were cleaner in their skills and looked fitter and covered the ground nicely.

Young players in Riley Easton (3 goals), Tristan Dowdy and Sam deNys provided spark and outside run and ruckman Nathan Congram worked hard and just kept on going in his second good match in a row - he is proving to a be true old school footballer, who just loves a contest. Brodie Easton enjoyed his return to football with 2 goals and said after the match it was great to be back and playing in such a good side. And Sean McEvoy kicked a goal!! (not a typo)

This year the Pies have good depth which will put them in good stead in the Reserves competition and of course keeps the senior side on their toes with plenty of players capable and ready to play senior footy.

Next opponents Palm Beach belted Labrador on Saturday so the Pies face another tough opponent Saturday week.

Coach Des Lashman was pleased with the change of attitude in his players after a lack lustre effort a week ago. With about 10 players missing out the pressure is now on to perform to hold a spot in the side

COLTS TWO FROM TWO TO TOP THE LADDER

The  Colts are flying the flag for the Magpies with two solid victories against strong opposition.

Against Broadbeach the Pies got on top in the second quarter but were challenged in the third before holding the Cats goalless in the last quarter. Both sides had 15 scoring shots but the Pies accuracy won the day.

Chris Jenkins was best across half back and fellow defenders Chris Moloney and Zane Lovell also played key roles to keep the Cats out. Skipper Noah Resuggan and fellow midfielder Jacob Sheath were also prolific ball getters for the Pies.

New player in small forward Ritti Batilimoyo could become a cult figure and he booted 2 goals in a great debut for the Pies. The Pies play PBC in a fortnight and the Lions had a narrow 1 point win over Labrador so it will be another tough match for the young Magpies.

WOODSMEN FOUR IN A ROW AND CLEAR TOP OF THE LADDER

The Woodsmen head the ladder in Friday night footy after a comfortable win over Collingwood Park last week. The Woodies are blessed with an experienced list and a bit more depth than previous years, with plenty of players keen for a game.

With Woodies stalwarts and key players in Chris Mihalopoulos, Sam Curtis, Andrew Thomson and Tim Green (among many others) unavailable it was it was experienced heads in Matt Hockley (6 goals), Gerard Moore (2 goals) and Chris Judson who steerd them home, as well as quality contributions from Luke DeNys, chris Davis, Will Lloyd and new recruit Steve Campbell.

With the Woodsmen having strong numbers as well as new found depth in the senior squad seeing quality footballers falling out of the Reserves side, coach Chris Mihalopoulous will have some real selection headaches as the season continues.  Certainly and injection of youth wouldn't hurt this particular outfit!

With the Magpies three QAFL teams having a bye this weekend, if you need your footy fix then head down to McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer on Friday night, enjoy the atmosphere and settle down to watch the Woodsmen take on the third placed Maroochydore at 7.30 pm in what is bound be to be a quality hit out against another form side.

PLACE PREVIEW - MAGPIES FACE HOT CATS OUTFIT IN FIRST HOME CLASH

The Western Magpies face another tough match when they host Broadbeach at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer on Saturday.

The Pies were narrow 6 point losers in Round 1 in a match they had every chance to win and this week come up against a Cats team which put perennial QAFL powerhouse Morningside to the sword last week.

The QAFL season is shaping as an even competition and the Pies must take advantage of their new look home ground to get on the board with a win.

The Pies made four changes to last week's side, with 2 forced as Will Fletcher and Liam Dwyer gained recalls to their respective NEAFL clubs, young forward Jack Austin goes to the Lions Academy and Riley Easton unluckily makes way for the return of Jake de Winter to the forward set up.

Jono Macanawai, who missed last week when he represented New Zealand AFL in an annual Anzac Day match against the Australian Under 17s in Wellington played on Anzac Eve,  returns to the side..

Macanawai adds some power to the Pies midfield which looks strong. Also in is ex-Pie Sam Copland back from Redland for his first match for the Pies since he injured an ankle in the first quarter in Round 6 last year after booting three goals in a scintillating 15 minutes of football. The Pies will be hoping he brings the same sparkle to his game on Saturday.

Making his Pies debut is key position player Stephen Mills from Redland and he will slot into centre-half back.  Mills has played at Southport and had three years in the WAFL and joined Redland in 2017, so will be a valuable key position addition to the Pies.

Doug Lawrence remains for another week at least and young Aaron Highlands returns to ruck duties.

De Winter adds an x-factor to the Pies forward line and Matt Davis returns to half forward with David Lewis where both started their careers. Coach Brydan Morgan hopes they will provide a spark up forward which was missing last week.

The Magpies look a strong unit but must win the midfield battles  to curtail what appears to be a potent Broadbeach forward line. 

In an intriguing match the Pies home ground may just give them the edge in what is sure to be an absorbing contest.

BIG NAMES ADDED TO PIES RESERVES

The Pies Reserves again look very strong for their round two clash with Broadbeach at McCarthy Homes Oval at Chelmer on Saturday with the addition of players with plenty of senior experience coming into the side.

Players with senior experience added to the team are Rory Johnson, Chris Hunt, Riley Easton, Brodie Easton, Rohan Smith and Sean McEvoy. Monty Vine also comes in at full forward and with the likes of Brady Allen, Val Pope, Lachlan Woods and Bryce Crossley in the team coach Des Lashman has on paper at least one of the best Pies Reserves team for many years.

But as last week showed, matches are not won with magnets on the board and the Pies will need to have a lift in intensity to match a Cats team that had a strong win over 2017 Reserves Premiers Morningside last week.

So Lashman will ask for a positive attitude and lift in effort from all his players, something that was absent after quarter time last week.

With the depth of the Pies much better this year a number of players were left out of the side, with several unlucky to miss out. 

The Pies cannot leave it up to the experienced players to carry the day and the likes of youngsters Tristan Dowdy, Sam Hartog, Sam DeNys, Luke Brennan, Matt Mazarolle, Jeremy DeRooy and Riley Easton must all be busy for a full four quarters.

Broadbeach will be confident after last week so the Pies will need to bring their A game if they are to pocket the four points.

PIES RESERVES DISAPPOINTING

The Western  Magpies Reserves were disappointing in their big loss to Mt Gravatt on Saturday.  With expectations high for a strong performance the Pies were out of the blocks early to boot the first two goals of the match. Unfortunately that is where it stopped as from then on a more committed, skilful and faster Vultures team took control to boot 13 unaswered goals before the pies got 2 late goals in the final quarter.

Coach Des Lashman was disappointed with the manner of the loss with the intensity of the side down after the first 10 minutes. It seemed the Pies collectively thought that after a spirited opening with 2 goals they were going to have an easy afternoon of it. When the home side bounced back hard the Pies had no answer and all of a sudden were chasing for most of the game. 

Basic skill errors of dropped marks, missed targets by hand and foot including several missed golas from directly in front all proved costly.

Best players were Luke Brennan on debut who played on a wing and tried all day, young half back Tristan Dowdy, another three debutantes in ruckman Nathan Congram, defender come on-baller Angus Wyllie and young rover Sam Denys, and veterans in centreman Bryce Crossley and half back Peter Kilroy on his first match back at the Pies after a few years in Sydney.

Another tough match on Saturday against Broadbeach, who defeated last year's Reserves Premiers Morningside on Saturday.

Coach Des Lashman will no doubt ensure his players will come to play for the full 100 minutes.

MCCARTHY HOMES MATCH REVIEW - PIES DOWN BY 6 POINTS IN THRILLER

The Western Magpies may rue the one that got away when they had every opportunity to win at Mt Gravatt but failed to grasp their chances in a tough, hard fought and tight contest in Round one of QAFL action. Mt Gravatt edged the Pies by one straight kick, 12.12-84 to 11.12-78

Little separated the two teams with 15 points the greatest margin all match. The Pies trailed by 2 points at half time and the Vulture's lead was to variably one or two goals throughout the second half but the Pies could not get their noses in front as they played catch up football. 

The match was played in slippery conditions after overnight rain which made for some congested football. However it was tough, contested football and made for an absorbing match. 

The Pies attacked for the majority of the last quarter and closed the gap to 2 points with 5 minutes to play but a freakish goal from the Vultures gave them breathing space and then two misses from gettable shots cost the Pies. The Pies had 8 scoring shots for 2 goals in a nail-biting 33 minute long last quarter to the Vultures 2 goals from 2 shots, including one from a 50m penalty and were well on top in the inside 50 count. In addition the Pies field kicking was a bit rusty with missed targets, especially when the match was on the line, proving costly.

Coach Brydan Morgan took some positives from the match and was happy with the commitment of his team and their toughness at the contest. He was disappointed with ball handling and disposal errors but says these can be worked on in coming weeks. 

Ben Jaenke-Cain gathered over 30 possessions in a typical non stop display and David Lewis picked up where he left off before injury last year to cut of many attacks across half-back with brilliant reading of the play. He was shifted forward late in the game and got the Pies within striking distance with a 55 metre goal on the run in time-on of the final quarter. 

Will Fletcher also worked hard across half back and continues to mature in his game as did Doug Lawrence at centre half back in his first game for the Pies for over a year. He again showed his commitment with several ferocious attacks on the football and tight checking of the Mt Gravatt key forwards.

Drew Mitchell worked hard in the midfield clinches and Matt Davis on a wing played his best game for some time working hard defensively as well as providing an attacking option. Dylan Adkins in ruck was solid in his first hitout for the PIes.

Young 17 yo tall forward Jack Austin booted 2 first quarter goals, one after a strong pack mark, to underline his obvious talent.

It is early days in the QAFL and with Surfers Paradise upsetting Labrador and Broadbeach easily accounting for Morningside the established order may be a bit shaky.

Mt Gravatt had good pre-season form and easily accounted for Broadbeach in a pre-season fixture but it is now serious business and the Pies will have another tough match in their first home game against the Cats next Saturday.

PLACE PREVIEW ROUND 1 - PIES TAKE ON VULTURES IN TRADITIONAL RIVALRY

The Western Magpies have included eight new recruits for their QAFL Anzac Round 1 clash with old rivals Mt Gravatt at Mt Gravatt on Saturday.  Plenty of them are familiar faces, as either former senior players, or club juniors make up most of the fresh recruits returning to McCarthy Homes Oval for 2018, but also some handy new faces as well.

Key inclusions are ex-AFL players Ryan Harwood and Anthony Corrie, fullback Dylan Adkins, centre half back Doug Lawrence, winger Luca Winton, promising youngster Jack Austin for his senior debut, defender Luca Mason and small forward Kale Reed.

Unavailable due to International Rules commitments with New Zealand is exciting midfielder Jonothan Macanawai and also out from the Pies’ last practice match hitout are key forward Jake de Winter, CHB Jack Goodall back to Redlands, and small defenders Rory Johnson and Sam Hartog.

But a look at the Pies’ Reserves team will see the Magpies have plenty of depth this season.

Ex-Pie Doug Lawrence comes back from Aspley after an injury interrupted pre-season and is a straight swap for Goodall and will be supported by Dylan Adkins at fullback, the reliable Harry Marshall in the back pocket and half back sweeper David Lewis, who looks back to his best form.

Aaron Highlands will shoulder the ruck duties again and the Pies midfield rotations will be strengthened this year with the inclusion of Harwood. Luca Winton injects pace in the midfield and thorugh half back and Lachie Dennis looks stronger this season and adds bite to the midfield.

Up forward Anthony Corrie slots into full forward with 17 year old Jack Austin the tall option and Liam Dwyer a mobile big man at centre half forward.   Brenton Saunders, Kale Reed and Riley Easton will provide the ground level options at the feet of the big men.

The Magpies look a physically stronger team this year and with the inclusion of the tall Adkins and AFL experienced Corrie and Harwood will be confident of opening the season against a strong looking Mt Gravatt outfit.

STRONG LOOKING RESERVES FOR SEASON OPENER

The Western Magpies have selected a strong Reserves team for the season opener at Mt Gravatt.

With Val Pope, Brady Allen, Lachlan Woods and Aaron Maricic in the side, the return of Peter Kilroy and inclusion of strong bodied new players in  Nathan Congram, Angus Wyllie  and Lucas Jackson and tall winger Luke Brennan the Pies look a handy Reserves team. Ryan Colclough joins as a half forward and he booted 60 goals last season in Toowoomba to add another forward option for the Pies.

Dual Senior Premiership player Sean Mewing is lining up again and with Bryce Crossley, dual Reserves Best and Fairest winner again the midfield general but with more supports this year the Pies will be confident of starting the season with the four points. Youngsters Sam Hartog, Jeremy deRooy, Tristan Dowdy, Kurt Vine and Tom Roderick will all be better this season after being blooded last year and the returning Sempitake Kwizera, Colts best and fairest several years ago, adds some pace around the packs.

With a strong contingent of players in the side looking to push for senior selection, The Reserves outfit will have a hard edge and plenty of hunger to perform.

Coach Des Lashman will be confident his side will start the season well with several seasoned senior players in the side combined with the talented youngsters leading the way.

Coopers Friday Night Footy - Woodies set to take on the Tigers

The Woodsmen tonight will take on the Mayne Tigers who are fresh off a Premiership in the Friday night Division 2 competition in 2017, and are somewhat of an unknown quantity going into 2018 after promotion to Division 1 for 2018.

The Woodsmen have started a healthy 2-0 after a hard fought Round 1 win vs Morningside before a comfortable victory last week at home vs Ormeau.

Mayne easily accounted for Jimboomba in Round 1 before losing to Maroochydoore in a rare Saturday outing, notoriously Saturday results can be misleading though with significant player unavailability for most teams.

As is often the case with the Woodsmen outfit, there are 7 changes from the Round 2 side, with players unavailable and a couple of Round 2 injuries to Jay baker (broken ankle) and David Jackson (ribs).

Coming into the side this week are Andrew Thomson, Scott Matthews, Chris Judson, Jake Fuentes, Brett McEvoy, Will Lloyd and Nick Kelly.  With a distinct lack of talls, this has resulted in some positional changes, but the wet weather is expected to offset this conundrum.

Place Update - Western Magpies QAFL Leadership Announced for 2018

Western Magpies Senior Coach Brydan Morgan recently announced the Pies Leadership Group for the 2018 season with 2017 skipper Drew Mitchell again named as captain for his second year in the role.

New Vice-Captains are David Lewis and Anthony Corrie.

The remainder of the Leadership Group includes Ben Jaenke-Cain, Harry Marshall, Ryan Harwood and Brenton Saunders.

Midfielder Mitchell led from the front last year to be joint winner of the Bill Peirce Medal. It was a tough year for the Pies on the injury front and Mitchell did all in his power to lift the side in the latter half of 2017. That he was able to tie in the Bill Peirce Medal after himself succumbing to injury to miss a few late season matches with was testament to his efforts throughout the season.

David Lewis is elevated to the Vice Captain role after starring across half back in early 2017 before injuring his knee and missing the rest of the season. His pre-season form indicates he should pick up where he left off as a vital cog in the Magpies lineup, and now a key member of the leadership group as the defensive general.

Corrie rejoins the club after a player/coach stint at Kenmore and his experience as an ex-AFL player and Western Magpies Premiership player will be invaluable. Corrie will also have a mentoring role with the Pies young players and play a strong leadership role through the forward-line in particular.  After a strong pre-season, where the veteran barely missed a session, he is up and about for the season ahead.

Ben Jaenke-Cain forms a key partnership in the midfield with Captain Drew Mitchell, and sets an example with his tireless workrate.  "Mr Perpetual Motion" and the 2014 Bill Peirce Medal Winner rarely plays a bad game, and is a strong example of consistency of effort to his teammates. 

2012 Premiership Player Brenton Saunders returns to the club permanently in 2018 after intermittent games for the Pies in recent years while NEAFL listed with Redland, including some absolute standout performances in 2017.  Adding another layer of leadership and experience, Saunders will be an important member of the new look group in 2018.

Harry Marshall joined the Pies from UQ in 2017 and immediately established himself as a vital player in the Magpies lineup.  A hunger for knowledge and a keen desire to learn and improve is the perfect example to set for teammates, and Marshall is the epitome of a player who is willing to listen and learn at every opportunity.

Finally, Ryan Harwood has quickly established himself as a leader at the club, and will impart a great deal of knowledge about how to prepare correctly for matches and has helped lift the intensity of training. Along with the other members of the leadership group, this extra layer of experience and resolve will enable the Pies to be well prepared to tough it out in the tight matches, many of which slipped away in 2017.
